Super User PhishLI Posted December 25, 2021 Super User Posted December 25, 2021 Having read through this thread I can't be sure of anything 100% and claim to know with certainty what all the facts are, but people I know, and here, have had to cancel their cards and wait for replacements. That's inconvenient at the very least because it's a time waster, and is always super annoying. Regardless of how well protected most digital transactions are after an incident, being the victim of theft is disconcerting. I'm not going to list all the ways that TW has been framed to be good guys in the industry. Their weekly at-the-counter videos with regular people "just like you" promote a feeling of comfort. Unlike DSG where you're never dealing with Richard himself or his descendants, TW makes us feel like we're dealing with actual people. While there might be some truth to that, who really knows? I've been in business for a long time and learned a long time ago that imagining things about people when it comes down to the bottom line is foolish and can be costly. I was naive, once. If you're a person that feels comfortable using a debit card anywhere, well knock yourself out. If you are, please refrain from illuminating the glories of them in this thread and believe what you will. I've never had one for my personal or business accounts and never will. I blow out my CCs on time every month and have never paid a cent in interest ever. As a seller on the auction site I was quite unhappy when they forced us to accept the pal that pays. It didn't enhance my experience as a seller of rare and expensive items, and I have 100% positive seller's feedback having only accepted postal money orders and fully cleared bank checks up to that point. Being forced to accept PP as a seller was a downside in my estimation, but it was an upside as a buyer. While I was honest to a fault as a seller, some sellers weren't, so having that protection as a buyer really worked out in my favor when I bought from several unscrupulous Basswholes! I'm not putting TW or anyone else that we as fisherman deal with in that category at all, but the fact is that I'm using a payment encryption service like Paypal, so I don't have to worry myself one tiny bit with a seller's level of integrity one way or another. What I'm getting from reading some responses here is that some people are struck with what has the odor of a breach of trust from an otherwise trusted seller. All I'm saying is that everyone has the option of removing at least one element from the equation by not directly transmitting your CC or debit card to sellers with or without faces. Merry Christmas! 5 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted December 25, 2021 Super User Posted December 25, 2021 Wells Fargo is on top of things still. Got a notice of a possible fraud charge on my debit card - I logged into my account and confirmed it was not something I purchased. WF refused the charge...no money left my account. They also decided that the card-info breach was worrisome enough that they sent me a new card, with new number, without my asking. New card is up and running - any further tries on my old number will be automatically refused. I love Wells Fargo. 1 Quote

Super User T-Billy Posted December 28, 2021 Super User Posted December 28, 2021 Just got an e-mail from TW's security company IDX notifying me of the breach and that my card was possibly affected. Kinda late. They determined my card was compromised on 11/6 but just now notified me. They did notify my card company immediately though. Card company sent me a new card without me requesting it, so I called them and the person I talked to told me they issued it because of available security upgrades. At any rate, my card company was great. Nothing fraudulent got charged to my card, they sent me a new upgraded card immediately so I wasn't without a card for a day, monitored my old card until the new one was activated by me, and provided fast friendly service when I called. Super User Cgolf Posted December 28, 2021 Super User Posted December 28, 2021 I wasn't as lucky as T-Billy. I did finally get the email from IDX, but it was 2-3 weeks after my card was hit with 2 fraudulent purchases. I guess the good news is that this likely clears Barlow's, ALF, and Amazon, but I will purchase differently online going forward. Now I need to decide how to handle TW. My thoughts are use them for great sales, but not sure the full 3-400 buck orders will go to them anymore. I am really frustrated, but they may have some good deals on baits on the 25 days sale I might not be able to pass up. Yes the thrifty side wins out over the p*****d off side. I think PhishLi said it best, there is just a trust issue now, on top of already being annoyed with pricing on some newer items being higher than other sites I am not the TW fanboy I used to be. 2 Quote

I feel much the same. The amount of time that passed from the time they discovered my card was compromised until they notified me is unacceptable. If I can purchase something for a similar price elsewhere, I will from here on out. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted December 28, 2021 Global Moderator Posted December 28, 2021 Well, on the bright side it sounds like nobody lost any cash. I’ve had my card info jacked before and I never bought anything online, the bank just called me and said “did you make an $11 purchase in Illinois?” No ma’am, problem solved. All the cyber stuff is beyond my understanding but if you didn’t lose any money, I would imagine all is well that ends well. I’ve said on here many times, I much prefer walking into a store. Sure I pay extra, but I’m lower middle class so it’s not a big deal haha. If you don’t shop at the tackle stores, they will be gone. If you live in a place with no tackle stores, guess why? 5 Quote

I've stated this before too. For 25 years, I've been buying almost all of my fishing tackle, ammo, and other outdoor gear in store. I'm lucky to have several large retailers including Cabela's, Scheels, Fleet Farm, and DSG within a reasonable distance though. 95% of the time, one or more of those places has what I am looking for. I see it, I buy it. I like to touch it and feel it and make sure its what I'm looking for. 2020 was an exception to this though. Retailers were completely wiped out. I had to buy some items online because there was no other way to get it. I hated it. When I need something, I need it in a day or two. Not a week. A lot of retail stock came back in the winter and I expected there to be another tackle shortage the following spring, so I stocked up in the winter when it was available. My wife loves to shop online. I hate it. She even buys shoes and clothes online which I consider to be a complete disaster. How do you know its going to fit unless you try it on? You don't. So half the time she has to ship it back for another size. I realize that not everyone lives within relative proximity of a physical retail store so their only option is to buy things online and have it shipped. But as long as I live where I am, that is not going to be me. As for tackle warehouse, I'm neutral on the subject. I don't regularly buy things there but I have in the past. Their stock is generally a lot better and their prices are competitive. Their delays in shipping (covid and pre-covid) plus a likely breach in security will likely drive me further away from them though. 1 Quote

I used to spend a decent chunk of change at a local tackle store, and they eventually sold. Once the new owners took over everything seemed to get marked up 2 bucks across the board. At that point the extra just wasn't justified. I do go there occasionally and the prices on some items are okay, so maybe they learned by that early price increase. We are also in Musky and Walleye first territory so Bass stuff always felt like an afterthought and were super light on plastics selection. They never had the cool stuff seen on the Latest tackle thread, but did have a ton of Rapala's and sometimes would get new baits early. 1 Quote

Therefore shop owner has to scale down inventory. the stores I really like make their own stuff, hooks jigs and plastics. The “supply chain” is in the back room haha. I took some pics in one the other day . im starting to think the supply chain for all fishing gear has been re routed to Vonore, TN. These guys have it all x 100!!! Granted, the internet is not somewhere Vonore residents spend much time 4 Quote

padlin Posted December 28, 2021 Posted December 28, 2021 Didn't have any bogus charges on my card but I cancelled it anyway as I got the same notice you all did. Unfortunately I only have the 1 charge card, been without since 12/18. Have had to notify 2 businesses to not use the autopay function as the card has been cancelled. If the newer new one doesn't get here soon I have to make more calls. Called Chase again today to report not getting the replacement, they are expediting the replacement for the replacement. What a freaking hassle. Will start looking for my first 2nd CC. Both Chase and TW are now on my naughty list. Quote

This is the fourth time I have been sent an email from them telling me how happy I should be that new cards that I didn't ask for are on their way. They should inform me their might be a problem, and let me decide if I need a new card. I'm not going to mention changing passwords. Most of us locals shop there regularly. His prices are good for the most part. He often gives discounts to regulars on big purchases. I generally get 10% off on rods and reels I buy there. The owner told me recently there are things that have been on backorder for several months. It's better than it was in 2020 but he still can't place an order and expect to receive all of it. 1 Quote
