No,  I've bought several TW gift cards in the last couple of weeks.  What I'm saying is that they can also be hacked.   Putting a lot of money on a VISA gift card and using it as a credit card so you don't have to use your credit card seems risky to me.  I don't know of any way to get a text when one is used.   Remember when you hand you credit card/debit card/gift card to a waiter at a restaurant,  there is nothing preventing them from writing down your number and using it later.   I can't make my credit card 100% secure.  I just want to know as soon as possible when someone else is using it so I can respond quickly.

I don’t even have to watch it, the bank is far more vigilant than I am. They catch it.

I agree.  It's amazing how good their fraud detectors are but they don't catch everything.  I've never worked for a credit card company but I've worked with people that have.  They know there are things they can do to reduce fraud.  The problem is,  they are not interested in any solution that cost more than just paying for the fraudulent charges.  Someone told me what is was about 20 years ago.  I think it was around $15 per million dollars charged but I could have that wrong.

So my card got hit, but luckily the card company stopped it. I have had the card for over 30 years and this is the first issue I have ever had. A little research online makes me think TW has known about this for a while. Not sure what they could have done, but warning everyone to be careful seems like it would have been a good idea.

I did learn that my wife's card allows here to get a one time use number so I may do that to do an order from the 25 days sale. Then I will decide how much I use TW in the future. The 25 days deal is it may be the last time ever to buy certain baits cheaply and I would in large quantities, so we will see what I do. The them knowing and not saying anything would really bug me if that was true.

My recent orders and charges with TW were good.  Now I need them to help with my UPS claim....for the Stradic and other stuff that were, quote, 'delivered' last Thursday

I usually buy them when they are on special like today, its like getting a 10% any time. I usually have a couple hundred for "emergencies"

But I do understand your point, even all scams they are always telling people to pay on gift cards mainly amazon. they are totally untraceable.

I never thought about giving them in a restaurant, nothing prevents them from taking a quick picture of it and all your money is gone.

I've been hit twice in the last month.  Both times after making a TW purchase.

First one was two transactions to Bancamiga (purchasing crypto I suspect). I got a text from Wells Fargo for that. I went into the branch bank and filed a claim and cancelled the card.

The second time I got a text on my phone asking about a Zelle transaction supposedly from Wells Fargo. I texted back N for no I didn't make the transaction (no Zelle account). Five minutes later I got a call saying it was Wells Fargo security and asking if I had authorized the transaction. The call wasn't from Wells Fargo. I told the scammer/caller I'd check my account through my computer and they hung up. Nothing showed up on my account activity.  I called the Wells Fargo Fraud line after that and they told me it wasn't them and any text I got from them would have a certain number it was from.

No doubt the criminals are upping their game.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire . Nice work sniffing out the caller, I probably would have fallen for that. My bank always calls instantly when something weird happens

It seems like a horrible idea to load money on a prepaid visa to use online to prevent fraud. It usually costs a fee to load money on a prepaid card. In addition, it is akin to using a debit card with fewer protections. They can empty the card and it’s your cash that is gone. If you load ‘just enough’ on the card that you can make the purchase, you are now making two purchases (loading the card and buying the merchandise) for every buy.

Credit cards have built in fraud detection and prevention, and you are not on the hook for fraudulent activity. Don’t use a debit card. Don’t use a prepaid card. Don’t use PayPal or any other goofy mechanism. Just use your credit card and track your purchases.

I keep seeing that this is continuing to happen to people after TW purchases on various different pages I'm part of. Previously I said that this isn't unique to TW; they aren't the first and won't be the last to be hit by hackers trying to steal people's money. And that remains true. However, that it continues is unique and honestly a complete joke.

Don’t use a debit card.

My debit card has the same fraud protections that my credit card does.  It actually has the same VISA logo on the card too.  I know this because when I experience fraud on it, the result is the same: not liable.  So tell me why I shouldn't be using a debit card again please.

Same here - and I've actually had my bank hold transactions and check with me.

VISA on the card - whether it's credit or debit - and you're covered...at least in my experience.

The reason I don't use a debit card is that with a credit card I get to use other people's money free for as long as a month and I get some free Cabelas stuff which is sort like a "stealth" fishing tackle account.

The thought process is that a credit card is tied to say future monies that you will pay back, while a debit card is linked to your bank account with real money that you have earned. I think the thought is it's easier to cancel credit fraud than try to get back the money you lost if some was taken out of your bank account in the case of debit card fraud.

All of the above was enough for me to order my new Zillion elsewhere during elsewhere's 20% off BF sale. I used Paypal which is the norm for me. No whackyness so far.

Yeah be careful. It's been a while since this happened, but I got alerted of potential fraud after TW black friday purchase. There was a suspicious small charge. Cancelled card.

What I figured was that it had to do with TW's third party vendor.

As previously stated, the same fraud protections apply to both of mine.

Maybe it is true for some.  I can't comment on whether others have the same fraud protections on debit cards as they do on credit cards but for someone to blatantly say that debit cards are not protected from fraud is a flat out lie.

I have always understood the personal liability with a debit card is greater than a credit card. Read the following link.

Depends on the bank too. Since my bank 'flags' questionable transactions, they put them on hold (no money out of my account) then contact me...I don't have to worry about getting my money back...just review it and tell them either 'Yes, that's a valid purchase' or 'no, that's not something I bought'. If it's the latter, they refuse the transaction and that's the end...none of my money is tied up during that process.

I don't doubt that it does, and our debit card would as well. That article Dwight linked is interesting, especially the overdraft bit that starts to drain into your savings account if your debit card is linked to your checking.

We just use credit cards online and at gas stations because they have no link to our personal bank accounts. That is the only difference I can see, fraud protection is the same, but the debit is linked to a personal bank account.

Also I don't think anyone is saying they aren't protected from fraud either, just that your exposure could be greater with a debit card if they get charges through before it is flagged.

Literally had my debit card info stolen last week. All charges credited back in 20 minutes with Wells Fargo. Second time that's happened right around my birthday, happy 30th LOL only last time it was around $1k. Still got an immediate credit albeit sometimes you have to insist on that part for larger balances.

If you never lost track of the physical card they're good about handling it.

I ordered TW last night so we will see what happens

Did anyone else just get an email notice from IDX about a data security incident?

Yes, it tells me to lock my credit files, which are always locked in my case. I also have notifications of purchases set on the card.

"Tackle Warehouse, LLC (“Tackle Warehouse”) recently experienced a data security incident that may have involved some of your personal information. We are writing to notify you of this incident and inform you about steps you can take to protect your personal information. As a result of this incident, we have partnered with IDX to provide you this notification."

Credit card info of 1.8 million people stolen from sports gear sites

December 17, 2021

Four affiliated online sports gear sites have disclosed a cyberattack where threat actors stole credit cards for 1,813,224 customers.

While not much is known about the attack, a law firm representing the four websites stated that personal information and credit card information, including full CVV, were stolen on October 1st, 2021.

The affected websites are the following:

Tackle Warehouse LLC (tacklewarehouse.com) – Fishing gear
Running Warehouse LLC (runningwarehouse.com) – Running apparel
Tennis Warehouse LCC (tennis-warehouse.com) – Tennis apparel
Skate Warehouse LLC (skatewarehouse.com) – Skateboards and skating apparel

The sites first learned of the breach on October 15th, and after an investigation, confirmed on November 29th the customers that had their payment information stolen.

The details that have been compromised as a result of this incident are the following:

Full name
Financial account number
Credit card number (with CVV)
Debit card number (with CVV)
Website account password

After the conclusion of the investigation, the websites sent notices to the affected individuals on December 16th, 2021.

None of the published notices to impacted customers provide any details on the nature of the incident, so the actual means of obtaining the data remains unknown.

However, as the description states, "External system breach (hacking)," this appears close to be a database breach rather than the implantation of card skimmers on the websites, although both scenarios are likely.

Whatever the case is, if you have purchased anything from these four websites, you should treat incoming communications with vigilance, monitor your bank account and credit card statements, and report any suspicious transactions immediately.

"Upon becoming aware of the incident, Tackle Warehouse took the measures referenced above. We also reported the incident to the payment card brands in an attempt to prevent fraudulent activity on the affected accounts," reads Tackle's notification letter to customers.

"We also reported the incident to law enforcement and have worked closely with the digital forensics firm to enhance the security of our sites to facilitate safe and secure transactions."

Unfortunately, the affected customers have not been offered an identity protection service this time, even though the compromised data is extremely sensitive information.

And with that, blind, biased support should cease. They're not the first and won't be the last, though. If you think this is crazy, wait until you hear about what's happened with the likes of Walmart and Target.
