Mr. Aquarium Posted November 27, 2021 Posted November 27, 2021 I heard there was a scam going on when ordering off tackle warehouse during Black Friday. Hackers were taking large amounts of money from bank accounts. I saw it on Facebook. Check your bank accounts. Quote
Super User MickD Posted November 27, 2021 Super User Posted November 27, 2021 I'm not sure how bank accounts get involved. Won't with me, paying with PayPal. 2 Quote
JbroBass Posted November 27, 2021 Posted November 27, 2021 Also not sure how bank accounts could get involved if paying with credit card. 2 Quote

Although ultimately these should be reversed after making fraud claims, you generally have much better protection from this stuff by using a credit card. 2 Quote

It is irresponsible to spread unsubstantiated drivel you saw on Facebook. It is criminal to call it a “Tackle Warehouse scam”. Can we expect an apology to Tackle Warehouse? 9 1 Quote

Does TW take bank accounts directly? If not, then it's probably check cards, which means it could apply to credit cards as well. Of course, I don't have any details and it may that hackers got the person's credit card because they made a TW order from a computer (or more likely android device) that had a backdoor on it with a keylogger or something similar. Super User Team9nine Posted November 27, 2021 Super User Posted November 27, 2021 Nobody has been able to confirm that it is specifically TW related or not. It started the week before Thanksgiving, and some posts on another forum, and it turned out that naturally on a fishing forum, most everyone had TW purchases in common...but not all. Might be coincidence, or might be a third party processor or vendor they use to process credit/debit transactions and not them directly. Nobody knows at this point, but the message/lesson is to definitely be keeping an eye on your credit and debit cards as there seems to be a big surge in activity the past week to 10 days in regards to CC theft, much of it to purchase crypto currency. 5 Quote

You can use your bank card as credit too, avoid any vendor and bank fees and have the same protections. It just comes out of your account until they deem it a bogus charge (if they do - they don't always do that) Quote

I just use a credit card, earn points, never have to worry about some/all of my bank account balance being temporarily frozen, and never pay a dime in interest because I pay the balance every month. I learned my lesson 20 years ago when a hacker got our debit card just when we happened to have our deposit for a home purchase in there, and the hold only got released a day or two before the closing. It was very stressful, and using a credit card would have nearly completely eliminated facing a similar situation. (I say nearly, because even your debit info can be ripped off by a bank insider.) 5 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted November 27, 2021 Super User Posted November 27, 2021 I've gotten to the point where I'm buying a visa gift card at a local stor and using that for online purchase. If there is a breach, whatever is left on the gift card usually isn't enough of the hassle to try and recover. 1 Quote

I do the exact same thing myself. Oddly, the only time I had bogus charges was right when I was buying my house on my check card from some random dating website that doesn't verify information besides the credit card number and expiration date. Luckily I happened to sign in and see my total balance was what it should be but my available was low so I called my bank which was how I caught it. They were rejected before they ever went through. 1 Quote

BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted November 27, 2021 BassResource.com Administrator Posted November 27, 2021 So nobody has had it happen to them, and nobody knows anyone (personally) that's had it happen to them. Just a random, unsubstantiated Facebook post and suddenly people are screaming " TACKLEWAREHOUSE SCAM!!" Hmmm....since these people are so gullible, maybe I should post on Facebook I have some land to sell in Florida - real cheap! 10 1 Quote
