Someone forwarded this to me.  The guy on the right (red jacket) is the first cousin of my work supervisor.  My supe is going to see him on Thanksgiving and ask him about this catch.  I am fully convinced that the state record muskie has been caught out of Mille Lacs several times over the years, but those fish were all released alive.  This one died, so getting it weighed on a certified scale for state record recognition was a no brainer.  If it stands, it will break a record that has stood since 1957.

The rumors are true! On November 22nd I set out on the last trip of my season with Kevin Kray and Zack Skoglund to chase the queen. At about 9pm I felt that tap on my Thorne Bros 9’6” XXH I’ve been searching for all fall. After a quick battle and a few ridiculous head shakes we had it in the bag. I didn’t realize how giant this fish was until I pulled it out of the net and immediately called Kevin over to assist with the buddy pictures. It measured an incredible 57.75” in length with a 29” girth. The next hour or so was spent trying to get her to release. Eventually we realized this was not going to happen and made the decision to bring it to a certified scale and crush the Minnesota State Record. She weighed 55 lbs and 14.8 oz. Huge shout out to Austin Tausk and Kyle Dorr for helping me find a place to get her weighed and helping with that process. Also Randy at the UPS Store was the man for being so cool about weighing it for us. I’m so incredibly blessed to be apart of this journey with my best friends.

I just saw this on FB posted up by the folks at the In-Fisherman. Beautiful fish with a healthy girth. True fish of a lifetime.

Great fish. I'm sure nobody feels worse about the fish not making it than the guy who caught it. A lot of bass guys could learn a lot from muskie fishermen on handling and releasing fish.

Circling back on this, as I had a chance to talk to my supervisor this morning about the discussion he had with his cousin who was present for this catch.

He was very resistant to telling my supe what lure it was caught on and even what part of the lake (even though its a massive lake).  He did relay that they caught it on a large plastic lure that imitates a cisco.

Apparently they really had an issue getting back to the access because ice had re-formed near shore after they had been fishing for hours further out in open water.  The access they had launched at was locked back up solid.  So they went to another one nearby...same problem.  The third one was slightly better so they broke through some skim ice and then one of them had to walk a mile down the road in the dark to get the truck and bring it up to the other access.  They also had great difficulty finding a certified scale big enough to weigh this fish, as most post office scales are 30 pounds max.  The next day they took it to a UPS Store scale almost 2 hours away to get weighed.  Its likely that the fish did lose some weight even though they had it on ice all night.

Its currently pending certification by the DNR as the new state record pure strain muskie.

The guy who caught it brought it to LAX Reproductions in Conover, WI a few days later to have a skin mount made.  I had a tiger muskie replica made by LAX last year which is currently on my wall.

Got to love it when they can't even use a picture of the right kind of fish in their news article ?

I get a fishing calendar every year from my daughter. One year she gave me a bass fishing calendar that had a perch on the cover. Bass on ever other page.
