clemsondds Posted November 21, 2021 Posted November 21, 2021 Just curious what reel do you pair up with a high end, light bottom contact rod? I know you could use pretty much any reel but wanted to hear what you choose and why. Doesn’t have to be just nrx; could be megabass p5, steez or conquest. Thanks! Quote
freelancer27 Posted November 21, 2021 Posted November 21, 2021 Depwnds a bit on what kind of bottom contact techniques you want to use the rod for. To give an example: For my finesse applications on my NRX 852c I am using a Steez CT, while on my bigger jig applications on my Steez BC 1 I am using a Morethan. Power and line capacity of the reel, as well as weight are informed by the specific rod and techniques used for me. Quote

Super User FryDog62 Posted November 21, 2021 Super User Posted November 21, 2021 On my NRX 852c I have paired with a Steez SV TW. I frequently skip Nekos under docks and like to feel if the worm lands on bottom or weeds to know if I need to wiggle loose or let sit. The Steez will skip Nekos as well as weightless wacky worms better than any baitcasting combo I’ve tried. 1 Quote

I just don’t know what qualities you are really looking for in a bottom contact reel other than quality build. I assume lightweight to balance well but what else is everyone looking for? I don’t mind putting more money into a reel I’ll be skipping with or one where I need a lot of control….but fishing offshore dragging a jig or worm…what criteria do you look for? Thanks Quote

mrpao Posted November 22, 2021 Posted November 22, 2021 For lighter applications i would go with Aldebaran or another light reel. For everything else, Metanium or Steez SV. I would choose a magnesium or carbon frame over aluminum for bottom contact. Its not only lighter but transmits vibrations better. Quote

It balances, throws light weight baits a country mile and palms lime a dream. It is my favorite Neko setup Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 22, 2021 Super User Posted November 22, 2021 The new Daiwa SV TW G is state of the art regarding casting distance without blowing up the reel into casting into the wind. The reel weight is ideal to balance with 7’+ NRX+ and other rods mentioned. For your information magnesium is the poorest metal known regarding transferring vibrations and used for vibration test fixtures for that reason. I would sell all my casting reels and buy the new Daiwa today. The OP is looking for MH fast rods to cast football jigs. Tom Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted November 22, 2021 Super User Posted November 22, 2021 I wouldn't buy anything Diawa after that thread we recently had about their beyond poor customer service. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted November 22, 2021 Super User Posted November 22, 2021 This how I have my NRX's set up..... 853C> Shimano Antares 70A 802C> Daiwa Steez SV CT 873C CCR (great for worms and jigs)> Shimano Chronarch MGL 904C MBR NRX+ (great for jigs and worms and anything else)> Shimano Metanium MGL 803S> Shimano Vanquish 3000 1 Quote

I looked up reviews of this reel and I saw nothing but good things. So picked one up on tw with their 20% off! Looking forward to giving it a try. I have no doubt the steez or antares would have been awesome, but just didn’t want to spend that much. Loved the Aldebaran as well but I think it might have been too light for my rod and made it a little too heavy. Some great options out there! Thank you for all the advice! 1 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted November 22, 2021 Super User Posted November 22, 2021 I would look at a Daiwa with a SV spool. If you don't want to drop big bucks on a reel, the new Tatula SV is really good. And if you do, the Steez SV is absolutely exceptional. 1 Quote

Thanks I like them all. Each is a pleasure to fish in their own way. The Antares 70A has been my go to and as wells as a Daiwa Steez SV TW but it's not on an NRX. I have it set up with a St. Croix Legend Elite. The Steez CT is for light weight stuff (not quite BFS). The Chronarch has been used for some pitching/flipping some bigger jigs and T-rigged soft plastic. I haven't had the Metanium long enough to give it an accurate account but it has been used for a little bit of everything and it does it all well. The Vanquish is used for Wacky Rigged senkos. 1 Quote
TBAG Posted November 22, 2021 Posted November 22, 2021 I guess I'm just weird or brand loyal but I can't pair a Daiwa with a Shimano/Loomis rod. Below are my NRX combos. 853c w/ Curado 71MGL XG 854c w/ Bantam MGL XG 1 Quote

Is there enough back bone for hook set power? Quote
freelancer27 Posted November 25, 2021 Posted November 25, 2021 I have not used it around docks. For these activities i use a NRX 804c. I prefer a bit more power for dock fishing to get the fish out asap. The nrx852c casts and skips nicely too and has quite abit of power. Caught multiple 5s with it. Quote

I just bought the rod, tip feels very wimpy. I’m concerned about hook setting power using with 1/4oz baits. My first NRX.. around shore line fishing in general. the 895c is a broom stick and very very top heaven. Going to send it back and exchange for the 894c. live and learn! Quote
