Looking at 2 rods to go with a daiwa zillion sv tw 2021 8.1:1. I don’t know much on fishing and looking at a set up for my nephew for Christmas. He lives and breaths fishing but will never get himself anything but Walmart specials to fish with. He mainly fishes bass off bank in open waters and sometimes brush. Casting style is at 1-3:00 due to trees and such being around. Like I said I hope I’m giving good info due to my lack of knowledge. This is his major set up most of the time but does throw other lures sometimes.

which rod would be best all around, length, action, weight, sensitivity, etc.  thanks

There a way too many to list brand wise. For the type of fishing you mentioned, he'd likely be good with a shorter rod in the 6ft.-6ft.6in. range. He won't get the distance out of a cast that he would with a longer rod, but would eliminate most of the hassle with overhead tangles.

For power and action a Med. Heavy, Moderate Fast to Fast action (the mod/fast will help increase casting distance). Look for something with a high graphite composition. IM6-IM8. As I said, there are a lot of offerings in this category with prices ranging from under $100 upwards.

St. Croix Bass X Casting Rod 6'6" Medium Fast

This would be a big upgrade from anything he could find at Wal-Mart. Don't let the price deter you, St. Croix  rods are top quality.

If you really want to go high end, there are a few Megabass rods that will be great for this specific presentation.  From the current p5 Destroyer line up, the F3-610X Bait Finesse would work so long as he isn't going to be fishing much cover.  I use mine with 10lb line and similar weights/plastics.  It's an amazing rod but at 6'10" it's a little long for really tight banks.  The F4-66X Cyclone  from the same line is a more powerful rod that is also a bit shorter, it should also be a good fit.  Both of them are also good "all around" rods and he will be able to use them for lots of other stuff.  I don't think any of the current XX rods will be a good fit as they are all longer rods.

One thing to consider is durability.  MB rods are not "weak" per se, but they will be far far less durable then a fiberglass or composite rod, which a lot of the very low end Walmart stuff is.  Megabass's warranty isn't great compared to most US brands, but the main issue these days is availability.  Even if the rod is covered you could be waiting months to get a replacement as they have been out of stock more often in then in stock since they were released.

Not trying to talk you out of your rod choices as I own neither model line let alone anything Megabass but I think fish wizard brings up some valid points as far as warranty’s. Although most of my rods are mid priced at best I have a St. Croix premier that I broke while being careless and their warranty was painless to say the least. I’ll also add Dobyns receives a ton of praise for their warranty program as well as their performance. Both companies as well as many others offer enthusiast level rods with much easier to navigate warranties in my humble opinion.

In the P5 line up....  the Bait Finesse or the X-bites.  Personally, I only have the Super Destroyer.  Great rod.

If I were picking, I would go with these two rods that will cover just about anything.....  G. Loomis 783C and 844C GLX.  I know the Megabass rods look cool and are great rods.  The G. Loomis rods will be more functional and come with a better warranty.

Looking mainly at the megabass orochi XX and destroyer lines

The Orochi XX doesn't have an offering that will work with the bait you mentioned.

The Destroyer line does, but it's a little long. Megabass Destroyer P5 7'1" Dark Sleeper. When you consider the handle is over a foot long, it's in the ballpark, provided he can work a long handle rod from shore.

In case you forgot, I'm your nephew too. I could use a new rod and would be elated if you gifted me that St. Croix rod I mentioned.?

Second vote for the P5 Super Destroyer!

It's versatile, one can throw moving baits on it as well as bottom contact stuff, it is short (which can be a plus for bank angling, but also a con - when distance of the cast is super critical) and it looks sexy (with the new Zillion).

This rod would get my vote.

Definitely you would be the uncle of the year with such a gift! ?
