There’s a good bit of incorrect species labeling in the commercial fishing industry. There’s even a pretty excellent book that touches on the subject when it comes to European sea bass

I got some frozen walleye from the grocery store in Michigan that said it was from Canada (because the fresh walleye across the street was outrageously priced). Who knows what it really was but it sort of resembled the shape of a walleye anyhow haha

They make everything out of pollock. The Filet O' Fish, artificial crab meat, cat food. As far as the OP, I'd be curious if it was actually cod.

Zander a close relative of our walleye are the European walleye & are found in fresh water & brackish waters. It looks just like a walleye but grows bigger in length & weight. Could be what you saw in Sams.

This statement is a true story. Although, the items mentioned above are made from pollock, it is pretty much 100% Alaskan Pollock, also known as walleye pollock...just not from the North Atlantic...Sooooo the mystery of the OP's question continues. ?

If you type in "North Atlantic Walleye" into google, it comes up as North Atlantic Cod.  Anyone that has cooked with cod, knows about the nematodes so there's some stigma attached to cod.  Not so with the word walleye.

I'll have to take your word for it b/c it doesn't come up that way on my device in google.

I only question it because Atlantic Cod is becoming as protected as Atlantic Salmon (not farm raised).

Maybe it's something else - mystery meat!
