Like mentioned, get some lighter heads. 1/16oz is the gold standard for me and what I use almost 100% of the time. My feelings also. Limp braids lighter than 20lb. is where things can start to become troublesome with spinning gear. Even on BFS casting gear, the smaller diameter lines are more likely to dig in on the spool and cause trouble some times. When it's not breezy out, the tiny diameter stuff sure casts a mile, though. ? The rods I like would very likely be considered too light by most and a ML rod would be more practical. I do think the lightest head weights are the most effective. 1/20 is my choice and I purchased a bunch of Z-Man Shroomz that size when they first hit the market. With other brands, the slightly heavier 1/16oz. would be my choice. Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted November 19, 2021 Author Super User Posted November 19, 2021 I appreciate all the advice and suggestions. My 1/10 oz jig heads and baits arrived yesterday. I removed all the mono off the Revros 2000 except enough for backing and spooled it with 20 lb. Sufix 832. I had 130 yards on-hand and I’ve been pleased with it so far, so I decided to use it vs buying 10 or 15 lb. braid. I tied on a 7” leader with clear 6 lb. mono (Berkley XL, which I also had on-hand). I had 8 lb. but there’s not a lot of structure that would be an abrasion problem so I opted for the lighter leader. The St. Croix Bass-X MLXF and the Revros 2000 is now set up as my Ned rig combo. Got the jig head tied and ready to get it wet tomorrow morning. I set the drag a little light (2 lbs) but I’ll see how that goes. Looking forward to giving it a good test! 1 Quote

I fish a TRD Bug alot on a 1/8 football head #2 hook, 6# XT. I lose a lot less jumping fish with straight mono, and don't feel like I miss many bites. A light spinning combo has pretty good sensitivity even with mono, and fish generally hold that light little bait a long time. My ned setup is a Tharp MM Special. 6'10" MLXF with a 2000 Penn Battle III. It's a sweet setup for ned'n. Also works nicely for catching those tasty crappie. Who makes those ned football heads? Quote

I've experimented with everything from a #4 hook to a 1/0. #2 is the sweet spot for me. I throw this bait alot on rock structure during the cold water seasons. It's a killer. Catches everything both big and small. 1 Quote

I've not used my Ned Rig enough yet to determine if I like braid (current set up) or mono (not tried yet). I think I went a little too light with my braid. It's less than 10#. Definitely need a leader on my braid for abrasion resistance. I don't fish where abrasion is normally a concern, but the braid I'm using is so thin it frays with twigs in the water. I've been using Sunline SX1 12# for a few years. It's as fat as most 15# braid but does very well in terms of abrasion resistance for braid. Quote
