The loudest squeaking buzzbait I ever heard .

I make my own buzzbaits . Yesterday I  decided to   assemble  one . Went through my parts box and was out of rivets . No problem I have  actual rivets. I select the smallest one but its still bigger than buzzbzit rivets . It has more surface area but the lip is concave , so very little will make contact with the blade . So with a pair of pliers and a piece of 2x4 I flatten the lip out so it all makes contact . Then I take the pliers and squeeze the lip of the rivet as hard as I can . I do this all the way around . It created spoke like ridges . I do the same thing to the lip of the blade that makes contact  with the rivet . Then assembled the lure and crimped the rivet in place . This  thing is loud . If there is a louder squeaker out there I dont know about it .

If you have an old buzzbait lying around , try straightening the wire remove the rivet and blade and do what I did , then see how loud it is .

I will take a pair of needle nose pliers & bend the edge of the rivet upwards, this creates a loud squeal.

 

Tying the buzzbait to your truck antenna on the way to the lake still works in elongating the blade hole allowing for more noise.

A few years ago I bought a tackle box of used lures off of Ebay.  I bought it for a rare crankbait I wanted but the best lure in the box ended up being a Lunker Lure buzz bait.  The previous owner had put an off bend in the blades, and the skirt was melted.  I put a new skirt on and it sat in my box for over a year.  One day I decided to give it a try.  The squeal was so loud, I thought it would scare every bass for miles.  It caught so many fish, that I didn't use another buzz bait for over a year.  I lost that bait on a giant bass that wrapped me around a flooded barb wire fence.  I have never had a buzz bait that worked so well, or made so much noise since.  I will definitely try the mods recommended here.

The rivets are soft and easy to bend. Next time I'm going to drill a small hole in  a board  , just big enough to slide the rivet in , then tap  the lip flat with a hammer .

My lunker lure buzzbait I found in a tree. Thing was so loud you almost wanted ear plugs.  Caught more fish off that buzzbait than any other.  I  still have it but the last fish it caught was a 46" Tiger Musky so it has been medically retired.

12 bucks is a tad bit high, I get them locally for under $10.

 

Since I have 4 older ones can't comment on anything else.

This is what I do with every buzzbait as soon as I take it out if the package:

 

- Slide off the rivet and blade
- Use an awl to work the holes in the blade slightly larger (could use a drill if you have right size bit)

- Use a file to rough up the edge of the blade that meets the rivet 

- Reassemble, but this time making sure the blade is forward as far as possible, then cut the wire leaving about 1/4” to bend back up (put as much space as possible between the hook and end of the arm)

 

Sounds like a lot but only takes a few minutes each. This will result in a buzzbait that has plenty of “squeal” and also eliminates 99% of issues with short strikes. 

 

I typically start with a Cavitron, but occasionally I’ll get sucked in by something “cool” looking.

Some of the things I have heard of over the years to do.

 

File the blade part of the buzzbait frame a little square.

File both the blade and rivet where they meet which will make it squeal more.

Crimp the rivet in place, heard this will make more noise because the blade is rotating against a stationary object versus one that can move.

Bend the wire to make the head drop down a little deeper into the water and improve hookups.

No doubt about it, a noisy buzzbait is one that catches fish.  Along with some of the modifications mentioned, I drill a few holes in one side of the blade or bend up the tip on one side.  This puts the blade off balance and that will make it noisier.

I had a buzzbait already set up with the rivet and blade flat against each other and sanded off with the rivet crimped. Just added the ridges with a pair of wire cutters. Can confirm this thing is very loud. I like it
