THANKS CATT.  THAT VIDEO IS FANTASTIC!!!

Okay.... I need to come clean on something.   I want to SCREAM exactly what he is saying on probably 80% of the threads that are posted on this forum but I don't  because I don't want to be "THAT GUY".  When I got my first boat I went down the rabbit hole of trying to learn everything, trying to fish every technique,  with every lure, in every color.  Had to have the perfect line with the perfect rod, and the perfect reel.  I'm now a very firm believer that the following quote, often attributed to Einstein, is the key to fishing.

"Everything Should Be Made as Simple as Possible, But Not Simpler."

TRYING TO FIND OUT JUST HOW SIMPLE FISHING CAN BE MADE IS ONE OF MY GREATEST AMBITIONS IN LIFE!

I saw a kid that fished a lake from shore evey day, catch far more bass than me, and all he had for gear was a soda bottle, with some old mono. for a rod and reel, a lure he made out of an old tooth brush.  He new where the bass were, when to fish slow, when to fish fast and when to take a break.  He could walk the dog with that tooth brush lure as if it were a Megabass, and could work it like a jig on the bottom as well as anyone.  It truly is the fisherman not the equipment.  Of course the Bait Monkey has his hooks in me way to far for me to change my ways.

I suspect there may quite a few on this forum that share your sentiment.  I know I do.  Whether it is some of the people I fish with, or some  I talk fishing with, or some who write (and now post videos) about it, or some who post online, I have become amazed at the mental contortions many seemingly go through to get a hook in a fish’s lip.

I am not a great angler by any means but at 70 years old I have learned a few things. This year has been my best year ever. I have thrown 2 different lures just about all year, a worm (Senko and finesse worm) and a crankbait, about 4 different ones, different colors on both. I have fished shallow water all year and the worse I have done is 3 fish ( wind nearly blew me off the lake).  I have also limited my area to the lower end of lake, mostly in a marina and a bay. I will continue through the winter, same places and same baits ( probably throw a jig some) and I bet I still catch fish. I guess what I am trying to say is you don't have to have a boat load of lures and run all over the lake to catch fish. Buying new lures sure is fun though.

I completely agree with him, which is why I always preach simplicity.

I'm very picky about what I use don't get me wrong, but I keep it to a handful of lure types.

I just have a ton of what I use lol

Keep it simple . Use lures that work in the cover or structure targeted and of the weight that can be  presented  competently .

Everybody fishes for different reasons. Some fish for different reasons at different times.

He's not wrong, but there's room for all of us to enjoy it for the reasons, and in the way that we choose to.

That video is excellent as are most others on Bass U, I have figured this out slowly in the last couple years.  Senko selection is down to two colors, I have two different flipping baits I use in two colors.  I used to buy every color and bait I seen others using thinking I would get the same results as they did, and sometimes it works but most often it does not.  So I have tried to simplify and tried to find what my style of fishing is, still searching.  haha  But I am still going to buy too many baits and rods and reels, because that is part of it for me!  haha

Yep....this.  All of this. K.I.S.S and trust your instincts.  They'll be wrong at first but over time they'll get honed and you will be a fisherman.  Not just a lure thrower.

#1  Location

#2  Timing

#3  Lure selection

Lure selection can make or break a day.  Whether it's color, profile, depth or speed...the

RIGHT lure can make all the difference in the world.

I have noticed that most fishermen overcomplicate fishing and that can be a reason why they do not achieve the success they want. Fishing is not rocket science, keep it simple and you should do well.

You can confuse yourself while fishing if you bring too much tackle and baits.

Keep it simple.

I could not agree more with what Gary said.  Find  a few baits you have faith and trust in and make them work for the conditions at the time.   Location and presentation are what you need to concentrate on.

I also believe much produced today, is made to catch fisherman and not so much bass.   A senko will catch fish from east to west, north to south.  Just work on speed, location, action, and it often requires changes in those three things as the conditions change.

Lastly if you want to really learn a new bait, go out with that bait and nothing else.  Instead of giving up and going back to old faithful, you will be forced to experiment with new action, and new  placement, rather then changing lures.

One guarantee we can all agree on is, you cant catch fish when your running, and tying constantly.  Your lure has to be wet!

Catts opening line is the best line “Gary Klein is an excellent teacher”.  Gary is also a student of bass fishing who learned his skills by listening to experts in bass fishing and applied what he learned.
