AManWearingAHat Posted November 9, 2021 Posted November 9, 2021 Question regarding line choice on a bait caster. Currently running straight fluoro on my "do-it-all" MH-Fast casting rod. I mainly ran swim baits and swim jigs on it this year. I want to start learning more how to fish jigs and other falling presentations (un-pegged T-Rig, creatures, etc.). I was considering switching to braid as a mainline with a fluoro leader, but I have heard that the slack line sensitivity with braid is not very good. When I read about falling presentations, I've typically been told to let them fall on slack line for the most natural presentation, which begs the question about bite detection with braid. Should I stick with the Fluoro? Any shared experiences would he helpful. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted November 9, 2021 Super User Posted November 9, 2021 Jigs, T-Rigs - any bottom contact I use FC (Patriarch 7.1:1 on Fury 704C) Braid is for my moving baits - spinners, chatters, etc (Patriarch 7.9:1 on Aird-X MH/F) Ya, two different combos. 1 Quote

I use 30# braid for all my jigs and getting to depth hasn't been an issue. I was using straight braid for plastics at the beginning of this year but went back to FC out of habit. If anything I would think braid would be an advantage for slack line presentations since it floats. There is only one lake around me that the fish are spooked/line shy and some days nothing works but everywhere else I fish they will hit on any line. It never hurts to experiment but I'll probably continue to use all three types. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted November 10, 2021 Global Moderator Posted November 10, 2021 Flouro for everything except frogs and punching. Mike 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 10, 2021 Super User Posted November 10, 2021 Bright colored braid that floats acts like a strike indicator on slack line. Braid with mono/Copolymer leader is a batter combo the using FC leader. Bass are not line shy and FC requires very specific knots to reduce knot failures. 2 knots is double trouble imo. The only presentation that braid with a leader may excel is weightless Senko/stick baits. Simply watch the extra floating braid for any movement that indicate a strike. I use 12 lb premium FC ( Tatsu or Shooter) for my jigs and sliding sinker T-rig soft plastic larger size worms and creatures. Fins 60 lb braid in very heavy cover and Sunline Armillo Nylon or Maxima UG Copolymer for everything else. Tom 1 Quote
LonnieP Posted November 10, 2021 Posted November 10, 2021 I use straight fluoro for jigs and worms 1 Quote
cyclops2 Posted November 10, 2021 Posted November 10, 2021 Most of my deeper water 11' or deeper is a gang of some type of fish. A loose school of resting SMB is never line shy about 60 or 80 # test braid. 2nd guy to the lure goes hungry logic is what they do. That is how 2 SMB or a jumbo perch & a SMB get pulled in. I have looked down & watched the exposed part of a Rapala repeatedly attacked by other fish trying to rip off a piece of the lure. Quote
papajoe222 Posted November 10, 2021 Posted November 10, 2021 Many like straight fluoro for jigs and worms, I don't as I'm old school when setting hooks and have had too many break offs when doing so. I use straight braid and have come to like the high-viz ones. I rarely let the bait fall on completely slack line, so between watching the line and feeling the tap of a hit, it works for me. I do, however, camo the last foot of line with a green Sharpie as I don't want the fish focusing on the line. Quote
rtwvumtneer6 Posted November 10, 2021 Posted November 10, 2021 Frog and Flip/Pitch/Punch vegetation with 50# braid. Prefer fluoro for jigs, mostly 15, 17 and 20#. Moving baits are fluoro or copoly anywhere from 10-20#. Braid as a main line on my spinning reels to a FC leader. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 10, 2021 Global Moderator Posted November 10, 2021 I use flouro for bottom contact baits on casting gear that aren't being fishing in heavy vegetation, those rods get straight braid. 1 Quote
Super User ATA Posted November 10, 2021 Super User Posted November 10, 2021 You heard right, Braid is not sensitive at all on slack, But when you have jack hook on jig the best way to do it is braid to fluorocarbon , I do 40lb test braid with 16lb Fluoro for that application. if you have finesse jigs you can do 14,15,17lb test fluorocarbon straight. ABrugs Posted November 10, 2021 Posted November 10, 2021 I’ve only used 16# and 14# Sunline Sniper for all falling techniques. I plan on switching to 12# Seaguar Tatsu next year as I’ve heard it’s the best and I don’t need heavier line in the waters I fish. 1 Quote
cyclops2 Posted November 10, 2021 Posted November 10, 2021 For catch & release of anything I hook up to AT DOCKS & BOATS TIED TO THEM. I NEVER NEVER use the 4 & 6# lines. with the small lures & their black WIRE HOOKS !! I know the hooks WILL WILL bend in a couple of seconds. What did I prove ? I just use the small floaters with no lip or hooks but a split shot 2' or 3' feet on the line A hit means it was caught or meat to eat. However Some of those fish are now educated about any splash And jumping it. A wake coming at the lure & no hit. It will only do 1 or 2 rushes at .....ANYTHING ,,,,,,tossed to it. Floaters, slow sinkers or full sinking to the bottom. I am happy with that fish being so wise and having that knowledge to pass on to the next years spawning. Quote
