twors Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I got a 40lb edge trolling motor that was acting up the end of last fall that needs fixin before this season starts. It was intermittently shutting down on me for reasons still un-known to myself. I thought it might be the foot switch but when it happens, it still won't come on even with the switch on the side of the pedal in the constant position. Battery connection looks good as well as the connector plug. Could it be the speed control switch? The motor has three seasons on it without trouble till now. Any ideas on where to start in figuring out this problem save from buying a new trolling motor. Thanks! Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted February 28, 2010 Super User Posted February 28, 2010 Have you ever checked for fishing line behind the prop? Quote
twors Posted February 28, 2010 Author Posted February 28, 2010 Have you ever checked for fishing line behind the prop? Yes, it was clean. This problem is electrical for sure but I'am not sure on what to replace first. Quote
Team_Dougherty Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Sounds like something is heating up and breaking electrical contact. Do you have an automatic reset circuit breaker? It could be the speed resistor, motor armature, speed control board or anything else current passes through. Quote

Its 50 amp breaker and I run 6 gauge wire from batt to trolling motor. I installed this seup myself and I bought nothing but the best stuff to keep it as worry free as possible. Do these breakers wear out over time? Maybe buy a manual reset breaker to narrow down the problem? Quote
stratos 375 Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 there are easy to find trolling motor experts on the internet that can tell you with a high degree of accuracy what's wrong with it. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them. Is it cutting on and off under load, or when you're running it on high for an extended time? I'd start by replacing the auto breaker with a pop out manual. At least you can eliminate that part of it. Have you tried the low tech caveman approach? Touch all the connections & motor parts & see if any are giving off any heat, stick ur nose near the electronics & see if'n you can smell burning components. That's my test. If it's broke, I send it out. One thing I've found out is that if you fish a lot, & depend on that motor, have a spare. You're gonna need it sooner or later. No matter if it's a MG or that "other" brand Quote

What is the amp rating of your motor? Quote
Brute Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 I had the same problem with mine and it turned out to be the breaker. Spent $20 and it is good as new. Brute Quote
