I'm pretty sure I looked at the 110s at my local store to see if they had outbarbs, and they didn't.

All the 110Jrs and 110Jr +1s had regular trebles.

I'll look at them at the local store and confirm if my memory is correct.

The 110Jr and +1Jr use standard light wire #8 trebles, they have never had outbarbs on them.  The rest of the 'regular' 110's and X-80's use outbarbs, except the LBO and 110R's which use a different round-bend hook.

I bought a huge stock of replacement outbarbs from MB-USA several years back when they would sell them to you in bulk, so I still use them when I need to replace.  When I run out it'll be the G-Finesse ones unless something new comes along between now and then...It'll be a while before I run out.

Spots and smallies will tear them up worse than LM, but I've noticed most of the damage is actually done in the boat while a fish is thrashing and/or while unhooking them.  They can also bend fairly easily if you swing 2lb+ fish into the boat.  You can be a little more careful and minimize the damage knowing this is where most of the damage happens.

If you're using lighter line, like 6 or 8lb test, you almost have to use light wire hooks like the outbarbs because the heavier hooks just won't get as good of a hold on the fish with the light line and softer rods.  Conversely, with heavier line, you'll bend out light wire hooks easier.  There's no single answer, the line, rod, and hook are all part of a system.

Hooks should really be thought of in the same category as line and soft plastics...To me, they are 'consumable' items meaning I just expect to replace them.  They will get dull from slapping against the bait eventually even if they don't bend, they have a limited lifespan.

Lost a nice fish yesterday, most likely a Spot from a straightened hook.    These baits are magic on fish, but one must take into account the hooks for sure.

Thanks for the knowledge.

If you're bending out the stock hooks I think it is worth revisiting your gear. Lighter line and rod, these baits were intended to be fished on spinning tackle with 6-8lb test fluorocarbon. If you horse 'em they'll bend out. Randy Blaukat has covered these baits to death.

I use a 6' 8" MF Daiwa Tatula paired with a 2500 or 3000 Feugo LT 6lb Seaguar invisx. I'll use the same rig different spool with 10lb braid to 8lb mono leader for smaller squarebills like s-crank or pop-x duties.

I find the key with these is your drag setting. I've bent out a bunch of stock megabass hooks when I first bought them but I figure they wouldn't sell a $25 lure with bendy hooks if there wasn't a method to it. There's a lot of great information on that in this forum. I had to lighten up my drag and line and everything got easier except retrieving snags. Line affects more than just lure action.
I caught a 7-10 on stock megabass hooks, one was slightly bent from unhooking but I only had two points in her and I was pulling her along just fine. I use the rod to pin and fight the fish with these jerkbaits, like I do with a ned or something. it will rip drag but it's supposed to. 12# siege does great with the action of the bait and is more than enough to pin and fight. I also replace the line tie with a dark colored duo lock snap but I do that on all hard baits. I will also say that what works well for the O.G. 110-style jerkbait (ito vision 110) does wonders with the others, they're all trying to get similar motions.

Or any other way of reducing the force applied, I opt for mono and a soft rod, and can pull most fish in with little drag ever going out on 10 lb. line, without bending hooks.

I wonder why MegaBass stopped using the out barb hooks?

The current ones are so sticky it's incredibly.

Reviving this thread, if that’s ok!

When did megabass start using different hooks? Are the new hooks any good?

Edit: nvm, I didn’t realize this thread had a second page which explained that the 110 still uses the outbarb hooks. My apologies!
