clemsondds Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 Just curious what you all would pair with a high end flipping rod. Lightweight? Gear ratio? Just a fun question to get your ideas…. Maybe a metanium dc 8:1? Thoughts? Quote
RDB Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 I have Steez SV reels on all of my bottom contact rods including my Steez Bottom Contact rod. The highest gear ratio they have is 7:1 (I think). I have multiple Metanium’s as well and I prefer the MGL over the DC (they are both good). You can get a good price on a JDM Metanium. 3 Quote
evilcatfish Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 The higher speed steez sv and A can be sourced through jdm sites and would be worthy of consideration. The newer zillion sv is another nice choice Not out yet, but this zillion hd looks interesting https://www.daiwa.com/jp/fishing/item/reel/bait_rl/zillion_tw_hd_22/index.html 3 Quote
KP Duty Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 How a reel fits my hand is paramount in my selection of a jiggin' reel. I keep all fingers above the rod's trigger while working bottom baits, and my hand feels cramped/uncomfortable with certain platforms. The Steez sv tw is a little too wide for my hand while jigging, and my finger hits the t-wing at times. Going to try a ct steez to try and match the palmability of my 13 concept reels. 1 Quote
freelancer27 Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 I have almost every high end reel from Daiwa and Shimano. I pick the (for me) right reel for the specific rod and technique. This does not mean though that I always buy the most expensive reel. In this case I chose the Daiwa Tatula Elite P/F for my Flipping rod (Daiwa Steez 7'9XH). The reel is not super expensive (I bought it with 20%off) but checks all the boxes for me: * It palms well * Has the right spool for pitching with heavy braid * Is super smooth * Has the right (out of the box) handle and know set up * Looks cool on the rod A expensive rod does not always require a expensive reel (and vice versa). Choose and buy for what makes sense. 1 Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 DCs are great, but I don't really benefit a whole lot from the DC system pitching/flippin. I prefer the MGLs over the DC reels for pitchin. You can get a JDM Met B for less then 300$ shipped. The spool is a 100 instead of the USDM 150 but the 100 has plenty of capacity. If you do get get a JDM Met just make sure to get the XG so you get the longer handle. The Curado 70 MGL and 150 MGL would be a good fit as well. I haven't had an opportunity to get my hands on one, but so far the Zillion SV looks like a killer. Quote
clemsondds Posted November 3, 2021 Author Posted November 3, 2021 What about skipping? I know sometimes when flipping, it’s nice to be able to skip a jig up under cover…would a dc/sv help with this? Quote

Careful, I felt the same way and now all my reels are ct's. It's not good on the wallet. Sv's for pitching hands down. I've owned them all. 1 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted November 4, 2021 Super User Posted November 4, 2021 Depends on the rod reel seat. Preferred the Steez SVTW and Morethan when using an ECS reel seat but since I've started using the MB P5's more for some bottom contact and pitching, I really like the JDM zillion G /w that reel seat. Didn't like the steez CT much but I have large hands. Prefer the Steez SV/A/morethan body the most. zillion G is super nice, too. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted November 4, 2021 Super User Posted November 4, 2021 Daiwa Elite P/F in 8.1 for me. Quote
clemsondds Posted November 4, 2021 Author Posted November 4, 2021 Thanks everyone! All the "mgl, sv, dc, svtw, ct, G..." gets a little confusing lol That elite p/f has me interested. Curious if it's easy to pitch skip with it. I know that's a technique that can probably be done with any reel...but with only going fishing once or twice a month, it's nice to have a reel that helps reduce overspin on skipping...thoughts? Another words, is the 8:1 important enough to find another reel if I can't find the elite...or is the reel good enough to just stay with the 7:1? thanks Quote

Super User Hammer 4 Posted November 22, 2021 Super User Posted November 22, 2021 P & F was being used long before the high speed reels came out, imho the 7 speed will work just fine. 1 Quote
