You can do it.  Just buy an appropriate practice plug and refine the technique in your yard.  Like many things, once you get enough practice, it becomes part of your muscle memory and you can get some of the line control benefits of bait casting with your spinning rig.  But since your control can be continuous with bait casting, whereas your control is once per line/spool revolution with spinning gear, the fine control is not as good as the case with bait casting gear.

I always go two front, two aft. Left hand opens the bail, right index finger feathers the line during the cast then closes the bail in one motion. Right index finger is in constant light contact with the line as it comes around with each rotation. Moving and contact baits get the same drill. I use shorter rods so the grip configuration maintains good balance with no tip heaviness.

I'm sitting trying to think about how I grip a spinning reel and honestly, I don't know.  I've never paid attention.  I do use my finger for strike detection so whatever way helps me do that is how I do it..lol

Watch the video I posted, it's more than just line slapping a finger once per turn.  It's a little crude, but works for me. If you panic, you can stop the lure dead just grabbing the whole spool.

There is more than one way to skin a cat (it's just an idiom, so PETA fans, go away).  I prefer one hand casting techniques, especially in tight quarters, so using the casting hand forefinger works very well for me.  If you want to stop the line, just press your finger against the spool lip.
