What are y’all’s favorite spinnerbaits to burn? Looking to try a new (for me) technique and wondering what I should get. I’ve got a couple 1/2oz but they seem to blow out the water when “burned”. From what I’ve seen though, 3/4oz may be too heavy?

Wondering if a half ounce Nichols would be good? I’ve weighed one that I had and it was 0.81oz. I can’t find it though so can’t confirm or try burning that one specifically. Thanks for any input.

It may not necessarily be the weight.  The shape and size of the blades will also dictate how fast you can reel it, as will the gear ratio of the reel.  A thinner willow style blade will have less resistance as opposed to a colorado or oklahoma style blade.

No better than a Screamin Eagle to burn for me. 3/4 oz will be generally fine and is actually my preferred size when burning a spinnerbait, unless I’m fishing SUPER shallow,     < 2 feet.

Also note that a spinnerbaits ability to “burn” is not only dependent on the weight. A double willow configuration with a “cone” shaped head is more important to the fact that a spinnerbait tracks well at high speed compared to the weight. I’ve tried burning other configurations but they just don’t work as well. They blow out at a certain point.

One with two BIG willow blades. I also like hammered blades, but you don't find them on most spinnerbaits these days. I could change them out, but don't really want to add to the cost.

I agree. I say the screaming Eagle is good for burning spinnerbaits and it is, but I do not like the technique for largemouth. Now, for smallmouth, A-Jay alone has proven that burning a spinnerbait is a killer technique

Why not use a spinnerbait instead of a buzz bait? ?

I barely throw buzzbaits, but from what I’ve seen myself, the spinnerbait can be retrieved at a higher speed without blowing out. Maybe I’m wrong though. Can anyone else confirm?

I just don’t like reeling stuff fast. But for those that do, screaming Eagle is a great choice and I think probably faster than buzzbaits. For buzzbaits I’ve found a moderate speed works best. I like to work spinnerbaits really slow

Stanley Wedge Plus

P.S Catt why do you recommend the wedge plus and not the vibra shaft, vibra wedge one in this scenario?

I've found when I am fishing a spinner bait "fast". I like to wake it like Catt mentions. I'll retrieve it fast enough to where the spinner bait is making the water bulge up and not break the surface. Then I have the blades break the top for noise for a moment or two then go back to "bulging" making a wake. It's been very effective for me at times. I prefer to throw a double willow 1/2 oz.

It's not about brand, it's about blades and weight.

While I agree that these are important for getting a spinnerbait to burn, there is much more to a spinnerbait. OP asked for a spinnerbait, not what weight and blade combinations you should use. The screaming eagle is quality.

OK, R2S, Ish Monroe, Bling model is one of the best quality spinner baits out there. War eagle makes a fine spinner bait too.

Don't come in 1/4 oz ?

I pick spinnerbait weight based on the size of the bait fish. Gizzard, Threadfin. Bluegill ain't all the same size.

Well kinda, matching what they eating!

I'm a dumb Cajun & matching the hatch is referring to what just came out the egg. That's just a tad bit to small.

I don't look at just the blade size, I'm looking at the overall spinnerbait profile.

I also like a Humdinger spinnerbait, small profile.

Do you actually want to burn it or just walk it? Because you can walk a spinnerbait without burning it. You’ll probably have more success too. No different than a buzzbait being more productive the slower you can reel but keep it on top.

Stanley Wedge is what I use. Y’all need to listen to @Catt;)

I am used to the notion of needing to listen to @Catt. It's why the stanley wedge is on my wishlist and why as stubborn as I am about not wanting to wake a spinnerbait because I think it's still too fast, I may considering doing it sometime. But my guts also say to stick to reeling spinnerbaits slow but still horizontal to the bottom.... when fishing for largemouth.

This has not proven true for me though. Crawling buzzbaits might work as the water cools but when the water was warmer, a moderate speed was best. I think it's because the buzzbait was louder and more obnoxious.

I was waiting for that ?.

Okay but A-Jay, what is your opinion? Is burning a spinnerbait great for largemouth? Or is this exclusively a smallmouth deal?

Works for both but you know I'm partial to Brown Bass.

Also the OP's avatar pic @bigspiritlooks like a brown bass too.
