Picking up a Revros 2000 spinning reel to pair with a 7' ML rod and looking for line suggestions.  I'm a weekend fisherman and will be using it from shore throwing drop shots, neds, finesse, etc.  The lake I fish is very rocky so I often get hung up and break off.  Should I stick with a quality mono or flouro?  Not too familiar with tying leaders so I'm hesitant to use braid...not to mention I feel like I'd be spending lots of time retying leaders with as much as I get hung up out there.  Thanks!

I used to be the same as you about the braid. But you can learn some surprisingly easy knots that do not break off when you get snagged. Alberto knot is my choice.

But anyways if it had to be between mono and fluoro I’d definitely go mono. Handles much better on a spinning reel compared to fluoro. I do use InvizX mainline on some of my baitcasters but I think fluoro is overrated. Go with 6# or 8# Trilene XT and you’ll be golden.

I would recommend Big Game 8lb line. It is a great line for everything you mentioned.

Leader knots are very easy to tie and braid to leader is the way to go with that reel and those baits you're wanting to fish.

Best mono options in my opinion: Berkley Sensation or Trilene Big Game, both in 8lb test.

Braid: sufix ProMix 10lb test.  I never use leaders.

Big Game 6# or 8#. Quality line that's very budget friendly. For the techniques you mentioned I'd personally go with 6#.

If you break off often and don't use leaders, you'll be chewing through a lot more line than you would by using braid with a leader. When you break off a leader, you cut off the braid at the connection knot, and then add a leader. If you use no leader, you lose however much line you lost, and it won't take long before you're way further down than is wanted for good casting.

I have two Revros LT 2500D-XH reels along with a Kage LT 2000D-XH, a Fuego LT 2000S-XH and a Legalis LT 2500D-XH. I have ended up with 10 or 12 lb braid on all of them, and use either mono or fluoro leaders of either 6 lb, 7 lb, or 8 lb test. The line almost always breaks off somewhere on the leader, so I rarely lose more than a foot or so of braid when I do break off. I use leaders of anywhere between 6 feet to 12 feet in length. I can break off three or four times, and then only lose a foot of main line when I tie a new leader.

I have become pretty good and quick about tying an Alberto knot when I am on the water and it doesn't bother me to do so knowing I'll be getting the most out of the expensive braid. I also like the extra sensitivity of braid and I can switch from 6 lb, 7 lb, or 8 lb leader without re-spooling. Braid is also kinda fragile with respect to contact with rocks and wood.

TL/DR version: Line is kinda expensive, and I like the feel of braid, so I am willing to deal with whatever else comes with using it with leaders so I don't keep losing a lot of line main line each time I break off.

Dont be afraid of tying leaders. It gets much easier in a very short period of time and not a lot of practice will get it down.

The FG knot is my main go-to. It passes through guides easily and is probably the strongest knot for leaders. It's easy if you maintain tension while tying. It will take a few times to get it down but every angler should know this knot, especially if leaders are used.

Over time, I learned a tighter FG than his produces a better and thinner knot. Here's my preferred method: Pic link:

https://ibb.co/9wvYSH9

One key is to have the braid tightly wrapped around your ring finger and pinky, so it doesn't slip. Spread the loop open tightly with your index finger and thumb. Spread the loop with good effort with those two fingers.

Your middle finger does all the work pulling the fluoro or mono through while keeping it taunt. Your back and forth wraps with the mono/fluoro are done by your free hand.

It may take sometime to figure out the correct size of loop to maintain so your middle finger doesn't collide all the time. Once you do you'll be tieing it in under a minute.

The other key to this technique is to keep the mono/fluoro anchored so it's as tight as can be, with a short working length. I'm sitting down when tying so I put the roll of of mono/fluoro under my right thigh and have a working length of about 18" coming out.

The widest part with this knot will always be be the trimmed tags. Make sure to cut them closely without nicking the other line.

If you mess up midway, use fresh mono/fluoro otherwise you would be tieing with kinked weak line. This could cause the knot to fail, so fresh line is a must.

Others may also prefer a modified albright but that's not my cup of tea. Also commonly recommended is the GT knot but it doesn't spread the load. It's only 55% as strong as the FG knot. GT knot will fail prematurely.

Good luck!

Fred

I’m using high-vis suffix 15lb. With a 8lb sunline leader.

i suck at knots and my vision blows.  I put on my glasses and get it done. The Alberto knot is so easy.  Ive graduated to the FG knot, built in my kayak I still tie the Alberto because it’s so simple.

drop shot with braid is awesome. I can feel the tiny ticks easy.

In that situation I would use 10# trilene xl.

I was using 6 lb. Trilene XL on my Revros 2000 and 2500. I now have 20 lb. Sufix 832 with a 6 lb leader (XL) on the 2500 but still have the spool on the 2000 filled with 6 lb XL.  I also have 20 lb Seguar Smackdown with a 6 lb leader on a Shimano Sienna 2500. To me, 10 lb XL is kinda big for those reels.

Try the Lefty Kreh knot. It’s very easy to tie and (knock on driftwood) I haven’t had a failure yet.
