Looking to get a rod that will have a1/2 ounce pitching jig on it about 90% of the time. Usually fishing it on weed edges and isolated cover, no need for a flipping stick. Noticed it's available in nrx+ which is the line I'd buy it in. Curious if anyone fishes this rod in any line and what they use it for. Thanks

That is the most versatile Loomis bass rod there is.  1/2 jig is a sweet spot for it.

I kayak fish so space is somewhat limited. Versatility is certainly a welcome attribute. Thanks for the response.

I have the NRX 854 & 893 JRW and they are both excellent rods.  Since it sounds like you want bottom contact, I would choose the 873 CRR for purpose you described.  It’s more like a 3.5 power, super sensitive, and IMO, one of the best NRX rods made.  It’s rated to 3/4oz but G Loomis tends to under rate their rods.  Unless you are going over 1oz or fishing heavy cover, the 873 should give you a wider range.  Tackle tour has a good review of the previous NRX 873 (non-plus).

Edit:  It’s also a super popular choice and hard to find used so it’s very easy to resell should you choose.

I have the 844C IMX and GLX and now the 904 NRX+.  The tip on the 904 feels a little softer to me but is great for tossing a 1/2oz jig.  The two 844C I have are just slightly better at pitching a jig but the NRX is way more sensitive and I haven't had it out to fish but twice so I still need to get use to it.

I already own the 873, I use it for Texas rigs and lighter jigs.  Just sold two rods so was looking to upgrade. Heard good things about the mbr taper and thought I'd get some opinions from this forum before deciding.  Thank you.

I have a Conquest 844C. It's amazing how useful it is.  :)

Late last November we were beating the banks of a long relatively shallow 225 acre electric-only lake. Around 2 p.m. schools of tiny bait began churning the surface out in the channel - it looked like 15' diameter circles of dense little raindrops. They'd pop up and before you could get there on the trolling motor they'd usually disappear. We fished a few of them but nothing we had tied on would hook a fish. We tried on the surface and we tried letting spinnerbaits and chatterbaits sink

Finally, while we motored to another spot I grabbed a rod with nothing tied on it and quickly tied on a Rapala DT10. I cast far beyond the commotion and reeled like crazy in 9' of water. The rod was vibrating to beat the band, at least until a fish hit. I made 4 casts before the bait moved and caught a 2-pounder, a 2.5 and a 4.0.

I was using my 844C with an 8.5 Metanium MGL loaded with 20# Tatsu. Toad rod, crankbait rod, what won't it do?

I have a Gloomis GLX MBR 844 c and a Gloomis IMX MBR 844c I use them for 1/2 oz jigs and 1/2 oz spinnerbaits with 15# fluorocarbon line. I like the IMX better than the GLX.  In fact I wish both were IMXs.

With the pricing on nrx + I'd strongly consider the conquest version.

I am strongly agree with you and it comes from years of experience with conquest line up, specially the 844C which is one of my most used rod in all the line up.

My friend who bought my two rods I sold said the same thing. It's under consideration lol.

I've got buddies with the new nrx +s and say they still have the gonna break feeling. I can't speak to the new nrxs but the conquest always has you wanting to lean in harder and you feel it's never gonna break.

I frogged 2 summers with this rod, and it has surprising back bone, do not underestimate it's power based on the flex. I switched to a 7'2 frog rod for longer casts, but the GLX 844C remains as one of my most versatile rods for anything over 3/8oz to 1oz. Are you used to 1/2oz jigs with a F or XF heavy rod? If so using this rod may take you a few hooksets to get comfortable with where the rod flexes its power, it's not immediate, but it hits when you need it. I think it would be a great rod for a kayak at 7'.

Anyone happen to know if there is a size difference in guides between nrx+ and conquest? Small detail but I fish braid to leader. Water is getting pretty cold here in Minnesota.... if I wait and shop around maybe I can offset the extra money in the conquest lol.

Since you are in MN the other option is a custom built rod from Thorne Bros.  My 844's are not stock, but Loomis won't sell the blanks to them anymore.  Great store and you can feel all sorts of blanks there.  I have about 30 customs they've done for me and they are all better than their stock counterparts for how I use them.

What is it about the imx that makes you like it better?

The GLX is stiffer than the IMX therefore it doesn’t cast as far.  I’m sure it is a personal thing but it gets fished less than the IMX.

If I could only have one rod my 844 GLX would be it.

I own both and I kind a think the opposite.  The IMX has always felt stiffer and I believe it delivers a more powerful hook set than the GLX.  On the other hand, the GLX is more sensitive and lighter.  I use the IMX for topwater and some heavier cover fishing.  The GLX is great for heavier T-rigged soft plastic and bottom contact jigs but the IMX is no slouch at these either.

Also, to add to the above, I just got a 904 NRX+ and the tip on this rod feels even softer than the GLX but that may be due to extra length.  All great rods though.

My 844 conquest is my if you could only have one rod rod. But if I wanted a jig specific rod I would probably go nrx+ jwr 4 power in whatever length you prefer. I have the 854. I like the 7’1” so I can skip my jigs a little easier.
