The antireverse on my Shimano FX spinning reel doesn’t work. It doesn’t matter how I toggle the AR switch, it doesn’t stop me from backreeling. I tried taking it apart, cleaning it, and putting it back together but it still doesn’t do anything. I made sure that there is absolutely no oil or anything in it, it just will not catch on anything

You might missed align the switch to the hole under AR clutch? When service Shimano reel I normally don’t mess up with the clutch, remove the whole thing, and clean with q-tip around the roller.

Did you open the clutch? You might have to rebuild it or order new one.

I’m not sure if you FX got the same AR clutch.

I'm not familiar with that particular reel, but on original Lew's BB-1s, I replaced A/R dogs every few years, and fished them on the days the A/R went out.  In the case of this weak, thin bronze part, it could only be hammered so many times before it cried uncle and forged to a shape that wouldn't engage.  Full-time A/R roller bearing on BB-25 was a huge step up.

I cropped this out of a schematic I found online.

No, the FX does not have a roller-bearing clutch,, rather it has a toggle pawl that ratchets on the rotor.  It looks like the spring 10138 keeps the A/R pawl normally engaged, and the A/R lever and cam allows reverse by loading against the spring to open the toggle.

I would look first at the spring - it's either worn out, broken, or not engaged in the toggle.

Mine does. It’s just like the one @Bass_Fishing_Socal described

I did, and I made sure to put it back together properly several times. Where can I order a new AR piece?

in that case, light oil is the bane of one-way roller bearings.

If lubed, they need viscous oil or grease.

If I were to diagnose the problem myself and from tackle advisor video, AR clutch doesn’t seem to go bad easily unless put it back incorrectly. I never messed up with AR clutch though, every reel I clean I don’t really touch them only a drop of oil and q-tip to clean it. I have AR clutch slipped on one of my reel due to grease got in there, but that would have some resistance or unless I jerk the handle really hard. I clean those grease out with REM oil and also act like lubricant.

I think AR clutch is about 10 dollars plus shipping from Shimano. How much is your reel worth?

Like $30. For a third of the cost of the reel, I was debating upgrading, but it served me well when it was still in action, so I guess I’ll have to think about whether to buy the part or upgrade

…And I fixed it! After hours of tinkering and watching videos trying to solve the issue, I diagnosed the problem. My AR assembly was perfect, the problem was that I put the nut-roller thing that it sits on upside down (the fat side is supposed to contact the AR assembly). I’m beginning to see why I failed the Engineering course I took freshman year.
