Of forgetting to target smallmouth bass this season! How did I let this happen?

I’ve been so focused on largemouth and while gaining experience with the t-rig and spinnerbaits that I got obsessed enough to honestly forget about targeting smallies.

Rain is in the forecast for the next 7 days. Not good. The rain doesn’t bother me. It’s actually a given living in this part of the country from now until May next year. It just makes for tougher conditions, especially from the shore. And this window of opportunity is nearly closed.

After I to my smallie gear prepped, I’m going to go after some smallmouth today. My gut tells me it’s probably going to be tough outing today, but that’s half the fun.

May this never happen again, not only to me but you guys too — i.e, going through a season without targeting smallies, lol.

Great idea! I think I might have chartreuse powder paint left over from the days I powder painted jigs for salmon fishing. I’ll also take a sneak peak at my daughter’s nail polish stash, lol.

Good luck out there! I've been pleasantly surprised a lot of times I thought the fishing wouldn't be great. I caught a 4# last week right after a cold snap and some rainy days. Let us know how you do.

I always find it so odd to read about “targeting” smallies. Our waters are all smallie waters. If you’re fishing, youre pretty much targeting smallies. I saw a guy catch a monster smallmouth on cut bait he had out for catfish. If you target largemouth, you could easily catch a smallmouth. It’s a hodgepodge

nonetheless I wish you luck on your smallmouth journey! Toss a 2.75 inch tube with an 1/8 oz jighead inside of it and they should be all over it

@TnRiver46thanks. It is true. Not all of the lakes in my area have smallmouth but I wish they did. Neither bass species is native to the pacific nw and they do not receive support from our states fish and wildlife Dept.

Me too.  I think I would be hard pressed NOT to catch smallmouth, no matter what species I was fishing for.  If I stuck a tater tot on a rusty hook I'd still most likely catch a smallmouth first thing.

Well, you get to jonesing real bad for a bronze fish fix even in the dead of winter, you can catch them year round in the Columbia from the WA side, never really fished to OR side but I imagine it's the same story on that bank, just be sure to mind the wind so you don't end up hooking yourself with the jerkbait when a 50+mph gust comes along lol.

Heck, it was like that on Lake Washington for me yesterday (ok, 20 mph winds), and I didn’t even have to drive 2 hours give it take to get to the Columbia, lol. Like a game winning 3-pointer with seconds left, I finally caught a smallie. It was little longer than my hand but it counts. It was already dark but I caught him at at 1830 on the drop shot with a 3” senko.
I posted a picture of the area in the post a photo thread before the sunset.

Do you fish exposed hook on your tubes or texas rig? I get hung alot on tubes but I guess that's fishing.

Mostly a round ball 1/8 oz head crammed inside of it with the hook exposed. I lose tons of them, but it’s a risk worth taking haha

i may try getting a jig head with a weed guard into one

If you live in the SeaTac area there is no need to look at the weather forecast. It's going to rain with a 85% chance every day of the year except maybe 4 weeks between July and August.

The way we knew the forcast is if you can't see Mt. Rainer its raining. If you can its going to rain.

Oh so true. I just live south of SeaTac. Mt. Rainier is such a majestic thing of beauty, that it makes it hard to leave this state. Did you used to live out here?

Army Ft. Lewis, WA 2nd BN 75th Ranger Regt. for a couple of years. That area is beautiful for about 3 weeks a year the rest of the time it just drizzles everyday. It wouldn't be too much of a problem except the Army makes you stand in formations outside all the time.

Thanks for your service! You are so right about the weather.  When I first moved here I came during the window and was wondering what everyone was talking about. ?

I just wish I would have fished up there when I had the chance. The Army sent me to several places that had good fishing and I did not take advantage of it until I was older.
