Super User Munkin Posted October 23, 2021 Super User Posted October 23, 2021 I will say I have a few extra lures lying around? This winter I will be selling off about $2k worth of lures just to clean out my basement of unused stuff. So if you are looking for something I probably have it besides wiggle warts I have sold them off. Allen 2 Quote
schplurg Posted October 23, 2021 Posted October 23, 2021 To all who say, "I'll use them someday", the Bait Monkey Support Group thread is down the hall to the right. I think that's one of the top excuses he programs us all to use. Bait Monkey: "Hey Mike....." - You need this now - It'll never be this price again - It'll be out of stock forever due to Covid (new excuse that works for me!) - You'll use it someday - You have more money in your account than you thought - Timmy is too dumb for college - You want a divorce anyways 1 2 Quote
Super User Munkin Posted October 23, 2021 Super User Posted October 23, 2021 My issue is I grew up very poor and could not afford the fishing stuff I wanted. Now that I make a 6 figure salary I can afford what ever I want but don't have as much time to fish. The less time I have to fish the more I want to go so I buy lures for when I can go. It got out of hand for a couple years but I have reigned it in lately. Allen 1 Quote
Smalls Posted October 23, 2021 Posted October 23, 2021 There's a video floating around of a bass hitting a block of wood that someone put some treble hooks on. So the idea that some piece of tackle "doesn't work" is silly. They're tools, and they have specific situations where they are the best tool, and other times there is a better option. The only time I'd agree with a tackle purchase being a waste is if you bought something of junk quality. Other than restocking lost/damaged/tired baits, I pretty much only buy new types of tackle if I know it can fill a role somewhere better than what I already have (or don't have at all). Quote

Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted November 12, 2021 Super User Posted November 12, 2021 Id be pleased if it was just tackle/lures but its reels rods line as well that never get used. NRX meh yeah I said it, H3 ugh, LTB phooey, cumara ho-hum. Yep thats a Core50mg7 on the floor over there with cobwebs on it. 50E SV105 Tat &Tat SV T3 Smoke S3 all work just dont get used. Well the S3 doesnt get used cause it buzzes loudly on hard casts so it will just waste away. Its all about the flavor of the day when something new gets bought the old toys just get pushed down the bench. There has been a couple standouts that have surpassed my expectations and go on every outing even after 10+ years of use that being Quantum Smoke casting rod and Avid spinning rod. Quote

That sounds like Marling Baits. He also did a ball of wood. I already replied to this thread but: I have a lot of plastics that helped me find out what my confidence plastics are and what properties I want in a plastic. So they weren't wasted, they were learning tools. There's a LOT of them though. Probably less than some others here, but still several times what I can carry in my usual tackle gear. Nowadays I don't really buy something if I don't have a specific use or if I'm not sure it'll have the action I want. The nice thing is - action with my style is extremely predictable, I'm a one-lure Larry and certain features always make my bait act right. I've had the rod and reel bug but I've filled that with three new rods and one new reel this week. Testing them out out-of-town tomorrow morning. Quote
Derek1 Posted November 14, 2021 Posted November 14, 2021 There’s no wasted $ on baits. Just fine tuning the selection of baits that work for your waters. It’s the natural progression of a fisherman’s life. And yes I have a bunch of sweet looking baits that I’ll probably not use but couldn’t walk past them in the store. 1 Quote

Super User Cgolf Posted November 15, 2021 Super User Posted November 15, 2021 Only wasted baits I have are Senkos and the generic senkos. I believe you when you say they catch fish, just not efficiently, time wise, for me. jerkbaits can be rough on me too if a longer pause is needed, but man the viscous hits I get on them are crazy. I had to fish it more than 2 hours without catching nuthin, trying different locations, depths, speeds, pulses, etc. before I finally caught one, but after that it's pulled in LMB's one after another and it's one of my go-to lures for a wide variety of conditions. Now I've gone through several copies of it and I keep a small stockpile and carry a backup so I'll never be without it. The key was my friend's credibility, because otherwise I wouldn't have stuck with it long enough to learn how to rock it. You may still learn to use them too. BTW jigs never worked for me either and I don't even bother to carry them anymore. ? Quote
cyclops2 Posted November 21, 2021 Posted November 21, 2021 I know when I have to much STUFF. I drag it all out on a bed. And decide what I will take to the hardship discount center for people not so well off as I am.. I make up a complete working setup some lures, spinners weights, float, pre snelled hooks. I hang around until a kid and parent come in. If the parent say YES he fishes. I & the family spend a couple of minutes on the gear. ONLY crushed hooks are given out. I show the family how to remove a stuck in hook sometimes Rub on Alcohol slide the hook into my skin. Then pull it out instantly. Parent & child smile as if a fear was ended. The sting going in is minor. Sometimes I get to see a child That I gave a setup to. Parent leaves it with me to chat about how they figured out how to catch several perch on 1/2 a worm. Life can be good sometimes. ? 5 Quote
Holetail Posted November 22, 2021 Posted November 22, 2021 This past weekend I took my kids to a park with a pond I used to fish quite a bit. For some reason, it didn’t produce a single fish this year. There was a teenage kid there fishing that I had seen several times over the past year at different ponds. I have several rods and reels that I don’t use much anymore since I’ve “upgraded” so I thought it would be nice to gift him one setup. Gave him a Duckett Crankbait rod and a Silvermax that have been collecting dust. The look on his face was priceless. Added benefit was showing my kids what it means to give to those less fortunate. 3 Quote

Mbirdsley Posted November 23, 2021 Posted November 23, 2021 I could probably fill up 2 good sized boxes. I buy most of the stuff I’ll never use during the winter time. Sitting around and thinking hey I wanna try that technique or fish for that. Than when push comes to shove in the summer time it’s kinda the same old thing. In the summer I mainly buy just whatever I run out on. I try to get my self to throw stuff away every 3-4 months. More do with soft plastics rather than hard baits. 1 year is generally my time frame with throwing out soft plastics. If I havnt looked at in a year it goes in the trash. also I target multiple species which really adds the clutter sometimes. It’s always “man, I wanna rig the boat for salmon” than come august when the salmon are close enough to shore where my boat can get at them I can’t pull myself away from bass fishing. Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted November 23, 2021 Posted November 23, 2021 Go through my stuff every winter, stuff I haven't used goes to my younger brother and the buddies that need some extra tackle. This winter it shouldn't be much, I have narrowed down what I use in baits now. I will stock up on those baits if I see them on sale though! Quote
