I pretty much use my thumb at the end of my cast.   Other than that it's mostly brakes.  It's a combination of the two that allows for birdsnest free cast.

If I feel like I'm not getting my max distance with a bait, I loosen my brakes.  When I loosen my brakes I'm sure to use my thumb a little more at the end of the cast.

If I'm backlashing a lot, I'll tighten my brakes up.  

Different weights of baits need different brake settings.
