Super User DitchPanda Posted October 21, 2021 Super User Posted October 21, 2021 For me it depends on the intensity of the rain. Intermittent light showers or constant drizzle can often times be my best fishing days of the year. If we are talking downpour then not so much. 3 Quote

Sorry but that reminded me of a story, probably a “guess you had to be there” story but I’m bored so I’ll type it. We were fishing in a downpour one time and all of a sudden it started raining twice as hard. I mean it’s deafening loud rain. My buddy Kerr, standing there fly fishing, says “rainin’ a little harder now……..!” I don’t know why but that just cracked me up. To this day, probably 15 years later, every time it rains really hard I can count on a text from him that says “raining a little harder now.” Like just two weeks ago, he and his family were camping at a campground in a camper and we were on a nearby island camping in tents. At sunrise it started pouring, and I didn’t want to get out of my tent. My phone made a noise and of course it’s from Kerr. “Rainin a little harder now” 2 5 Quote

My buddy Brian was heading to his family lake house with his friend Dylan earlier this summer. They ran out of stuff to talk about...so like an old farmer at the local diner Dylan looks out the window then looks at Brian and says " corns up". Been an ongoing joke with all of us all summer. We even considered getting shirts made. 1 1 Quote

My best fishing days of the entire season often occur in the summer when we get a low pressure system moving in with rain. I also do not fish in a down pour (although I have been caught in more than one), but I'll go in a steady rain. My best fishing month of the season by far this past year was in August and I am positive it was because we actually had constant weather changes with regular low pressure fronts coming through. We did not have this in June or July, as it was sweltering hot and dry for virtually 2 months straight with high pressure which is why fishing sucked during that time period. Rain also keeps recreational boat traffic off the water which is always a plus. As for a fall rain, I am still not quite sure if that is helpful or not. Regardless, that region needs a good soaker. I wouldn't say frenzied, but in your situation, I would venture to say, with the stability of that westward moving front, you can expect the fish to be cooperative. With 4-7in. of rain, depending on where you are, you can expect the fish to be moving up. Especially if the lake wasn't drawn down during the preceding months. If that's the case, I'd recommend starting the day targeting the upper water column and any newly submerged cover. Have fun. Quote
schplurg Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 It finally rained a little here. I had a flat tire a few nights ago on the freeway and I said to myself, "It's gonna rain on me when I start to change it, right?" I'm just glad I survived. Getting a blowout on hwy 580 at 70 mph was not fun. I hate that road and everyone on it. But the rain is welcome. Quote
GRiver Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 Glad to here California is getting some rain. Some of by best fish has been just before or at the start of rain. After a few hours of it, the bite seem to slow down a bit. Quote
Alex from GA Posted October 26, 2021 Posted October 26, 2021 I fished in the rain yesterday afternoon when we weren't expecting rain. They weren't exactly jumping in the boat but the bite was OK. Quote

Rain has been nice here in SOCAL. fishing for me has been slow in the rain, not like last year, but I think thats because its been one big cold front for the past month, its usually 80-90 and its been 50-70, accasionally one day a week being 80. not normal SOCAL weather, and bass seem to be a little wierd acting. cyclops2 Posted October 26, 2021 Posted October 26, 2021 Before during & just after rains ? All those insects washed into the water. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 27, 2021 Global Moderator Posted October 27, 2021 The low pressure system just before the rain arrives is usually best. During or after a heavy rain can be good but is usually more sporadic. I fished in pretty steady rain Saturday in my kayak during a tournament and the bite was horrible. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted October 27, 2021 Super User Posted October 27, 2021 Right before the rain, yes! That's usually the best time to fish for me. During the rain... eh... I've usually had about as much luck as I do on bluebird, sunny days. More often that not, the bite will be tough. Sometimes, the bite can be pretty good though. You never know until you go. So I usually avoid fishing in the rain, just because it's uncomfortable for me and doesn't usually help the bite. But, if I'm just itching to go out and the rest of the weather cooperates (not too cold, not too windy, and no lighting, which are rare for an Oklahoma rain storm), then sometimes I'll get out in it and give it a go. Last night I woke up to tornado sirens in the middle of the night (and it's late October). Had one run by about three miles south of me. In this part of the country, we don't get a lot of the type of rain you'd want to be caught out in the water on. 30-40 mph winds are the standard in a storm and 70+ mph winds will often pop up out of nowhere. So take what I say with a grain of salt. In other parts of the country I've lived in, it made more sense risk being out on the water in the rain. Here, you don't get a lot of safe opportunities to even try it. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 27, 2021 Super User Posted October 27, 2021 I love fishing in a slow drizzle with no wind. 2 Quote
