GoneFishingLTN Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 I have two brand new interstate battery’s 6 months old. Well the last two days my four bank charger shows they are fully charge both times. But when I go out and fish for 5 hours with two carbons one on stand by 60 percent of the day and running the min motor (150 4 stroke merc) it says warning battery low. now when I test them when home they read 12.3-12.4 after charge they read 13.4 give of take. What’s going on Quote

You have two new batteries but a four bank charger? Are your electronics running off of your trolling motor batteries? Also, you said you are getting 13.4 after they charge, are you taking that reading while the charger is still plugged in and charging? The first thing that comes to mind is that you are running a 36V TM but only replaced two of the three TM batteries? That could be your problem if that's the case. Quote

Sorry I explained poorly I have 4 battery’s but two to the motor and the electronics the two others are for the trolling motor. I’m running a 24volt 80lb fortex 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 20, 2021 Super User Posted October 20, 2021 2 deep cycle marine 12V batteries in series for the TM,1 cranking battery for OB engine and 1 deep cycle for the electronics? Are all the batteries the same size and type? or TM’s larger the cranking and house battery? Tom Quote
newbiedmv Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 A dumb comment but might be worth it. For some reason in 40 years I've never had any luck with interstate. 90% of the usage was in farm tractors (only ones I could get at the time). They never seemed to hold a charge. The tractors were small 40-60 pto hp. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted October 20, 2021 Super User Posted October 20, 2021 Your reading at 12.3 volts is probably correct. They are about 50 % discharged and that is not good. You didn’t state the size of the batteries. With today’s electronics you need really good strong batteries. I had lots of trouble keeping my cranking battery up running Lowrance HDS Gen 3 units. I had to jump start if I stayed on a bank more than an hour. They would completely kill the cranking battery in a year. My solution was a Batteries + bulbs X2 1150 cca 225 rc agm cranking battery. Personally, I always try to stick with Penn East batteries - those would include Some Duracell, O'Reilly marine batteries, West Marine, Deka and MK. Johnson may have the higher sales numbers - but for me that's because they fail more often, so more get sold for that reason. Quote
newbiedmv Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 Explains why my Everlast batteries only last maybe 5 years in the tractors. We had interstate batteries at work both reg and deep cycle. They had problems. Quote

I’m not sure but I’m thinkin my new console unit is somewhat draining to my electronics. My battery wAs old anyway but now it seems to have weakened after the upgrade. Thanks for the battery recommendation, I wrote down those cca and rc numbers for when I’m shopping. For now I just turn it off when I walk from the console to the trolling motor, don’t currently have a graph hooked up on the bow Quote

Since you are saying that the Carbon's are running down both batteries, I am assuming that the batteries are hooked together. Do you have them hooked in series or parallel? If they are hooked in series you are sending 24 volts to your electronics and boat ignition but you are only getting the amp hours of one battery. If you have them hooked in parallel you are sending 12 volts and should be getting double the amp hours. They have to be connected differently than your TM batteries to work properly. Quote

They have to be 12v for a marine system. There should be other numbers - like CCA and Reserve Time - that's the info we need. Yes, again the Duracells are going to be 12v - there should be some other numbers like Reserve Time or even ##AH as well as a Group number - 24, 27 and 31 are standard for marine batteries. Quote
GoneFishingLTN Posted October 29, 2021 Author Posted October 29, 2021 So I took my batteries to interstate here and they said both run at 900 and are good around 800 so the issue is that they are both cranking. They informed me I need one deep cycle and just one of the cranking batteries 1 Quote
