So today was really rough, it was one of those "lots of annoying things happen day" my spinning reel blew up 3 times because of line twist. No idea why the reel had such bad line twist, but it did. So after cutting 50 feet I fish some more and the fishing wasn't tough, but the negative experience really gated me from catching any fish, becoming annoyed and not focusing on my casts or retrieves. I called it a day after 5 hours because I couldn't enjoy myself with half a spool. Anyone have days like this? How do you guys combat the negative mentality

Prayer. It tends to put things in perspective, and priorities in order.

Had one is those days yesterday. Met a buddy bright and early at 7am...it was windy and it was only 33 degrees. 2nd cast I was working a popper and my buddy got a huge birds nest in his spinning reel. While I was looking at it distracted I had a bass destroy my popper and I whiffed the hookset. No big deal right? Yeah except we didn't get another bite for the next almost 2 hours. Long story short we fished 6hrs, only caught 4 bass between us and my buddies line issues continued losing half a spool on 2 spinning setups.

How do I combat the negative mentality? Well that's a super easy answer. I just remember that I could be at the plant for 12+ hrs making ethanol, cleaning equipment and loading trucks. If I ever get to the point I'd rather do that than fish well that will be the day I get a new hobby.

Had one of those days about a month and a half ago.

I had a long a stressful day, spent over an hour in traffic to make it home.

Got to the lake at about 1940 and I had about 20 minutes to fish. Had to pick up my son at 2000. So with great haste I tied up a T-rig with a 3/16 oz bullet weight.

Then I noticed this:

Come on, ib! How can you make such a rookie mistake. In my gut, I knew this was not a good sign at all. Half of me knew things were just going to get worse from this point and the other half said fish when you can fish.
The latter half won.

I retied it and ran to the shore with my casting set up. I had just commissioned my curado 101d for duty from out of storage. I set the reel to the lure’s weight and quickly made my cast. That dreaded thwrrupppp! sound followed.

Unbelievable. It was so bad, this stint was over. I undo the side plate and what did I find? Zero brakes set. What a dummy. What an idiot. Ib sure knows how to shoot himself in the foot.

Momma said there’d be days like this, lol.

Success is on the same road as failure; success is just a little further down the road.

My 'bad' days usually start off before I'm ever on the water and just continue to get worse. One started out with loosing the locking pin on my trailer's swing away tongue.  Not much damage to the tow vehicle.  Got to the ramp eventually, only to discover my cast off rope was missing. By the time I got on the water, I'd totally missed the morning bite.  Proceeded to break the only rod I've broken in 25yrs and blew up my favorite reel so bad I couldn't get it out after trying for 20min.  To top it off, I only caught one dink all day.  Sad to say I have a number of days like that every season.

I always think of this, "Don't sweat the little things...all things are little."

Then I go and fish a new part to the lake...or practice a lesser used technique.

Yeah, I hear you. I ended up just flipping and pitching bushes with a 1/2 jig in gen clear water, surprisingly got a few bites on this technique

That's a bummer man, went camping and loosing the locking pin, not fun when you are far away from stores
