Lately I’ve been fishing for spotties and I’ve been loving the little pull they give back once hooked. Shout out your favorite jig head color combos so I can try out

This isn’t salt water, just a lake.  Right now a green pumpkin 1/2 oz football jig with a spring craw trailer has been best.

This is not a popular opinion, but I don't consider spotted bay bass or Cabazon as a bass. Yes they are in the bass family, but are more comparable to crappie for lure selection, they are super small and they normal only get 1 or 2 lbs. The world record is only 6 lbs, a sizable pb is 3-4. After fishing for them for 4 years on a biweekly basis , lmb lures for spots is like swimbaits for lmb. Smb lures work really well for quality spots (you won't get bit alot with these lures, similar to jig fishing for bass)  finesse jigs and 3-3.5 inch dropshot or trick worms produce bigger bites. Standard lures should be maribu or crappie jigs, or grubs. Moving baits can consist of smaller jerkbaits. To put bluntly, spots eat more crappie sized baits than lmb and sub.

Owner 1/8 oz Dart head w/Kietech 2.8 Chartreuse Shad is good combo for Spotted Bay bass around marina docks.

I use to throw a bass jig for them and actually do pretty well in Newport Harbor around the docks.  I like a 1/4 oz jig with a big skirt and use a Berkeley Gulp shrimp for a trailer.  I make my own jigs so like a big profile to slow the rate of fall.  I will toss them around the docks and just let them slowly fall and get bit.  As mentioned above I normally get more numbers by drop shotting eel grass patches over fishing a jig/swimbait/jerkbait

You could check with some of the tackle shops down your way about colors. I've caught tons of spotties, sandies, and calicos on a 1/2 oz swimjig with a 3" Big Hammer swimbait in various colors. A long time ago I bought some of the best swim jigs from a guy in San Diego, don't recall his name. These will work best on a incoming, or high tide, which is when the bite is the best.

Now you're talking

On top is cocahoe minnow on long-discontinued Stazo jighead with double hook.  1/4- and 3/8-oz - this is for fishing 3+' when you can't see the grass.

Of course since you can't get Stazo jigheads any more, can substitute with similar-weight salt-hook jigheads. If I didn't already have a good supply of Stazo, I'd be using heavier Texas-eye jigheads here.

In the middle is Z-man Texas-eye jighead in 1/8 oz and 3" MinnowZ for mid-column - stays in the zone, right on top of the grass, and never hauls up grass.

On bottom in my upper photo is Texas-eye Finesse jighead in 1/15 oz with SlimSwimZ 2.5", which does well for imitating winter glass minnows in tide passes.

What makes both the Stazo rig and Texas-eye jigheads so effective is the lure flexes in every direction, making them feel natural, and making the fish hang on to them.

The best lure I know for the skinny water is TSL Grasswalker on unweighted swimbait hook. Neutral density, 1/4 oz, casts like a bullet - they stay in the shallow zone, and dog walk with just about any retrieve - best mullet imitation I know.

You can also fish these on weighted swimbait hooks for bottom-bouncing winter tide passes - this rig will work anywhere a Vudu shrimp will work.

An owner flashy swimmer in 1/0 or 3/0 and a slug or fluke type lure has worked well for me. Can flip them in docks or work them weedlessly through grass. MC makes a nice slug type lure that works really well with the 3/0.
