Alex Ball Posted October 16, 2021 Posted October 16, 2021 Just picked up a David Fritts 7' mhm crank rod, going to use it for deep crank and heavy spinnerbaits. I'd love any suggestions on reel speed (retrive rate not gr), line and other possible uses. Thanks. Oh yeah, here's the specs: line- 15-30 lure 1/2-1 1/4 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 16, 2021 Super User Posted October 16, 2021 12 lb Big Game with 150-300 sizes reels that have between 5:1 to 6:1 gear ratio. The trigger is wide on this rod, uncomfortable for some anglers. Enjoy your new Lewis rod. Tom Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted October 16, 2021 Super User Posted October 16, 2021 My personal opinion of those rods is that they're great. For crankin' rods like that, I try to hit about 24-25" per turn. A Shimano Cardiff 200A works just fine with 1`2 lb. test Big Game. jj Quote

Super User WRB Posted October 16, 2021 Super User Posted October 16, 2021 12 lb Big Game is ideal for deep diving crank baits. Rod line ratings are simply recommendations, it’s the lure weight that loads the rod. Today I use 11 lb Armillo for deep diving crank baits, a little better casting distance. Big Game is far less expensive in 650 yard spools allowing you to change it more often. Tom 2 Quote

Quite a few nylon lines are de-rated to make them appear stronger than other lines. It's marketing. jj Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted October 16, 2021 Super User Posted October 16, 2021 I have the 7'6" MH. Spooled with braid it's great for chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, toads, buzzbaits, swim jigs....basically any moving bait in it's weight range with a big single hook. The soft tip lets them get the bait good, and with braid it has plenty of backbone to drive the hook home. Quote

Almost caught a striper on a casting spoon! Blew the hookset cuz I got enamored by him jumping out. So fun! 19 minutes ago, jimmyjoe said: Not only that, but 12 lb. Big Game is more like 18 lb. line.
