Are people really getting rich making fishing videos on YouTube?

Absolutely. Once you reach a determined amount of followers, YT will "monetize" your channel. Meaning you get money every time someone watches your video.  But it's really the sponsorships that'll pay the mortgage. Sponsors that are interested in partnering with people with a large audience, for obvious reasons.

Ben Milliken is a great example of someone you could easily watch go from a guy who just thought it'd be cool to post a few videos, to "recently bought a nice house on some land, and got a brand new boat, and truck, all paid forwith sponsorship money". And the boat is actually a sponsorship deal, so...

You now have an easily identifiable way to see how many people your angler's reach out to, and how many people see your company's products and logos. This is now how every industry in the world reaches potential customers, and angler's will easily be forgotten if they refuse to adapt.

Once a youtuber passes a 1 thousand subs, advertisements start getting played before their videos, and they make money that way.  This is how it's been explained to me.

They also make money by sponsored videos, and products they represent in their videos.  You can make a ton of money off of youtube if you do it well and people like what they're watching.

Don't bring up milliken..its a sore subject for me. He is from my neck of the woods and I watched him since he started...until he started making clickbait videos instead of actual fishing videos. I realize he's making a living but to say his new videos suck is an understatement.

As for Randy he was on yesterday promoting Matt Stefans new video talking how hard it is to make a living fishing. I've been very patient with Randy because I like his instructional and regular fishing videos. But all he posts now is how YouTube is screwing tournament anglers, tech is ruining fishing and its impossible to make a living tournament fishing. I'm about at my wits end with his crybaby crap. Here's an idea...want more stability? Maybe get a real job like the rest of us for the first time in your life

I go to work every day and for 12 hours, I do things that I don't really wanna do, because that's how I get paid.

Same difference.

How's that the same? You go to work and make stupid, teenage click bait YouTube videos? Also people single out the audience that got them where they are when they completely change styles after they make it...that's what he did. He can do anything he wants and I don't fault him for making as much money as he can but I won't watch his caught my pb 8 times, spill way monster then lost $188000 worth of swimbaits videos anymore. Also the part that stinks the most is it doesn't have to be that way..Tacticalbassin has as many subs as Milliken and they aren't fake.

What drives me wild is when randy says there’s too many tournaments on certain lakes, then he signs up to fish those tournaments on those very lakes hahaha. Must be some kind of reverse psychology smokescreen?

Well he got some, it was fishing pretty tough from all accounts. He’s way better than I’ll ever be at catching bass. But if you don’t like big tourneys on the same lakes every year, why contribute to the problem?!

The YouTube market went from nonexistent to flooded literally over night. He may be one of the more popular channels, but he still has to adapt to continue to grow his reach. Will he lose a couple followers like you and I? Probably.  Will he gain 20 more younger followers to replace us? Yup.

Matt and Tim are an anomaly. They provide good, factual information, then show you how it works. Why? Because they enjoy it, and don't expect anything in return. I've literally seen Elite pros shove the bait they were catching em on in their pockets so no one would see it. While they are successful, Matt and Tim also have jobs, and neither rely on YouTube monetization or sponsor deals to pay the bills. I wish we could have more people like them in the industry, but that's not how the world works.

fyi - I have a full-time job (not this site - but an actual 9-5 corporate job). THEN I come home to work on this site at night...and weekends....every day....for 25 years.

Why do I do it?  Because I love to help others.  That's it.  Nothing more, nothing less.  It's fun.

The sponsor deals are for paying the BassResource bills.  I get a small supplemental income after the bills are paid - certainly not enough to live off of. LOL!

Thank you Glenn!

Bass Talk Live explained it best, for me at least.

Most "fishing" youtubers aren't good anglers, they are in fact, good entertainers.

Just watched an interview with them on Dave Mercers podcast and it sounds like they are doing YouTube fulltime..no more day jobs. But you are correct they are they exception not the rule when it comes to fishing channels on youtube. Maybe part of the problem is me..guys like Milliken and Randy probably aren't ever gonna be what tacticalbassin are for me so I'm holding them up to an impossible standard and judging them harshly when they fail to reach the mark.

I like Randys rants . I have seen  several pros  ranting this past week over the same subject , rising tournament cost and low payouts  .

This is an age old complaint.

Everybody complains about the high costs and the low payouts.

Then some rich guy said he was gonna create his own trail > get rid of weigh ins and entry fees

He promised sponsors would dump money into the anglers because he was going to give them so much exposure

That pipe dream ended after one year and anglers were back to paying entry fees and sponsors were not paying anymore for all the "extra views" they were getting on the discovery channel.

You'd think in the 70 years of tournament fishing all these experts/complainers would have been able to build a better tourney trail

When Bass invited a lot of FLW guys over , I wondered if Randy got snubbed . If so , I dont blame him for being a bit bitter . Hes more than paid his dues .

He didn't qualify for the Forrest Wood Cup for 5 years leading up to BASS inviting guys over.

(FWC was the FLW version of the Classic, you earned your birth by AOY standing)

He's had a decent career but the things that worked against him was his success and his age.

Randy complains a lot, but to be fair, I don't think he was complaining about Youtube particularly, just pointing out that this is the new reality.

I watch way more Youtube videos than I do tournament videos.  I and millions of others. Sponsors would be insane not to make the adjustment.  A guy wearing a gaudy jersey with a thousand different logos isn't going to bring in the money like he used to.

Randy finished 11th in the Toyota championship on pickwick today, two places ahead of Brian Thrift. Looks like he’s still got some tricks up his sleeve !

I really liked his video breaking down the last day where he came up 3 oz.  short and the decisions he made to "leave them biting".

I haven’t seen that, I’ll have to check it out

Unfortunately Bass eat spinner baits very well right where I live, I just can’t fish them properly

Yeah, he had to leave early because he had a severely bent prop.  Bent it in practice and couldn't find anyone to repair it.

I’m just waiting for them to start using retractable underwater periscopes hooked up to a video monitor so they don’t have to lay down with those megaphone lookin’ gadgets up to their eyes. Watching those guys fish is like watching paint dry. I may be in the minority, but I think all the technology is taking the fishing out of fishing. Are they using drones to hunt yet? I don’t want to know.
