I've watched other pros, not just B-Lat recently. I tend not to watch them though, I like watching whoever is interesting regardless of fame.

I used to watch Scott Martin but got tired of him. Not enough fishing. Roland too. Love them both but not really getting much from them.

I like Greg Blanchard, for instance, because he fishes pretty much the entire time, and he's local and he keeps it real. No product endorsements really, just a cool dude who fishes. I don't learn a lot but I enjoy his videos. I also credit him for getting me into yak fishing.

as some others have said you gotta be able to do both now. you cant just catch big bags win or place high in tournaments put a patch on your shirt and get paid. you have to be able to catch em , use social media to engage and promote product and understand marketing from the companies point of view.the days of old bob the recluse who keeps everything secret and doesnt talk to anybody being on a pro staff are over.and you cant just put crap out there you have to be able to articulate and communicate with people. look at tim and matt ( tactical bassin} you probably never heard of them from tournaments or guiding until you saw one of their videos. but theyre likeable guys who can teach and make the average fisherman understand what they are saying.

Here's my opinion on this whole deal- I think you can be successful either way. Guys like Palaniuk and Wheeler are great anglers and also great youtubers. Know who doesn't have a big social media presence? John Cox. He does very little yet I bet he isn't hurting financially. He just lets his fishing do the talking. Lets me say this about Randy...I like him..he has interesting tips and tricks. But his whole whoa is me I can't catch a break because people are trying to make my family starve and all technology is the work of the devil shtick is getting old. Also he's posting in a YouTube video...that he makes money on btw..that fishing youtubers are ruining things. Seems slightly hipocritical. There are a lot of guys that like fishing and wanna make money doing it...so just because they aren't pros they shouldn't be allowed to do that?

This is why I am still a huge fan of Ike. He has proven he can win tournaments and catch fish. But he has said he wants to be home with his family more and what has allowed him to not professionally fish but still keep those big sponsors? You Tube. He is quite popular on you tube and I watch his In the Shop alot to learn from someone who has proven they can go out with the best of the best and win and also just loves to fish. Watching him kayak fishing and catching a big crappie and getting excited about it tells me he just loves to fish.

So "school me" (I dislike that phrase) about how an elite bass tournament makes it's money.  I assume it comes from several sources that include direct corporate sponsorship, as well as, participant's entrance fees (which may in some cases also be paid by corporations).  If corporations reduce their financial support because they are moving dollars to non-participant social media "influencers", will elite tournaments suffer to the extent of collapsing?  Or is the corporate support so little that it wouldn't affect a tournaments existence?

By now, a lot of us have seen the Luke Bryan video "Bill Dance".  How many young people recognize KVD or Johnny Morris in that video?  I'm guessing most young people would only know Bill Dance because of his blooper vids on youtube.  If you put that Milliken Fishing moron or the "Googans" in that video then all the kids would know who they were.  The money goes where the clicks are.  I hate those videos with screaming music and fast cuts and the drone shots but I'm old and just want the kids off my lawn.  I may have the money but I'm not spending it on every new lure and energy drink and whatever that comes down the pike.  I need a rod with a Senko, a frog, or a jig tied on it and a cup of coffee to be a happy boy.  Advertisers know this and are therefore not even trying to sell me anything.  I'm fine with that.

I think Randy is crying because guys like the googan squad are filthy rich from fishing and he's just another wanna be pro struggling to get by. He has probably seen his own sponsorship dollars reduced and younger guys get money that he doesn't think that they have earned. (ironically, he'll probably see a bump now that he's got a youtube following)

The corporate money is there and was enough to support 4 major tours - BPT , BASS, FLW and the NPFL. (Although Boyd's pipe dream about being able to attract enough sponsorship dollars from non endemic businesses to eliminate entry fees went away as soon as times got tough/covid) But I agree with 4 tours of anglers and sponsorship dollars going to social media anglers there could be less for each individual. Although I often wonder how many more fishing related companies there are now? Googans may have taken some sponsorship money, but now they are dumping it back in too.

Everything is evolving except Randy's POV

-Whopper plopper isn't successful anymore because everyone is throwing  it -

The spinnerbait and buzzbait almost fell out of their rocking chairs they were laughing so hard

"Pro" or not, people with deep knowledge willing to share it in meaningful ways that reach a large audience will always catch the attention of sponsors.

100% agree.  Not that I am anything great but I’ll use myself as an example.  First off, I don’t tournament fish other than the occasional benefit tournament or events like Wounded Warriors.  Early on in my fishing career, I did fish some local tournaments but the “dock talk” about a guide fishing against weekend anglers made me back out of them.  I did fish some tournaments when I lived in Florida but they were more fun than anything.  Let’s be real, the majority of fishing products are purchased by consumers who are not keyed in which pros are sponsored by which retailers.  With the growth of social media, the pros have a new way to reach out and make sales to a segment of the population who has never seen them walk across the weigh in stage.  It also opened the door to non pros who are better at marketing and entertaining.  As a guide, I put my sponsors products in peoples hands instead of telling them how good they are.  The product impression I make is much stronger than watching a video but I reach far fewer users.  When I do seminars in Bass Pro or Cabelas, I reach a bigger number and talk one on one after and can answer questions directly.  That’s why pros normally have a number of in-person engagements written into their contracts.  I used to go to the fishing manager at both of these stores before a seminar and ask them what product they wanted to move.  I would then do a seminar about that product and would clear the shelves.  At Bass Pro I would do my seminars from the tank and we used to call it “the magic of the tank”.  The problem with the pros is simple.  If they are a full time touring pro, they do not have the time required to devote to what it takes to be a social media superstar.  Especially if they are doing more than 1 trail.  That’s fine.  There’s multiple avenues to sell product and that’s what it’s all about.  Sponsors are always re-evaluating how best to spend their marketing dollars.  As many avenues you can touch, the better.

Okay, I will probably make some people mad/upset with what I am about to say, but here it is. I don't feel sorry for anyone who tries to become a "professional" fisherman. They knew the risk/reward going in. That being said, I understand the frustration seeing guys making thousands/millions simply off of social media. I chose to be a public school teacher knowing I would never be wealthy. I've been doing it 16 years and making a measly $46,000 a year while some guys/kids are making that in a few months on social media. Am I jealous? Hell yea!!! I would love to be able to record some content and make 10x more than I currently do. However, this is the path I chose in life. Social media wasn't around when I chose my career, I couldn't do it now because I don't have the time, but I am also not interesting enough. I love what I do and I won't ever complain about getting to interact with the youth of today and trying my hardest to be a positive influence in their life. I can assure you, they love their Tiktok and Instagram way more than they love learning geography from me, but I try my best.

Randy should spend some time as a substitute teacher, then his life may not seem so miserable. :)

Hahaha! Or crawl under houses infested with rats and skunks!

I could create plenty of fishing content, but turning on the computer is where my skill set stops.

teachers should make double what they get. I don’t think I would go to school everyday for a million dollars

LOL!!!!!

The benefit for me is that I am out of school when my kids are out of school. They ride to school with me and ride home with me and I never miss a ball game. I get to fish, golf and hunt more than I could with almost any other job. I am home every night to have dinner with my family or I am with them at games. For me, the time I get to spend with my family is priceless.

are the students allowed to use their phones during class? and if not what measures are taken if you catch them using it?

Back in my days in school the 70,s, passing notes was the thing and often times the teacher intercepted them.

No, if we see them on their phone we are supposed to take it away from them. We are then supposed to take it to the principal and she handles it from there.

I don't know if Randy is complaining.    I've heard his name more in the last year than in the previous 15 years.   Why?  because of his controversial youtube channel.   I don't know how much money he's making from it but he has about 50K followers and growing.  The dude has found a better way sell beef jerky.

It's the beef jerky comment for me!

Perhaps, I have no clue. I do know there are TONS and TONS of guy out there now that I don't even know the names of. So many tourney circuits, etc etc. Obviously the big guys like KVD and Wheeler stand out, but unfortunately a lot of guys get lost in the weeds. It's pretty tough when you're being compared to a couple hundred, if not thousands of guys. I guess it's like a defensive lineman in football, there's so many out there, we don't know the names of probably over 75% of them. But we do know the names of all the top quarterbacks. Randy has a long history, and if he continues to perform and do well, I'm sure he will continue to rise up into the bigger circuits!

Kids in my school are, teachers ask them to put it away, but nothing happens if they do.  I know of one kid who's had his phone taken away, in the entire school.  I don't care much about the phones, what annoys me is the airpods.  I doubt if the airpods leave their ears more than 2 hours a day.

Are people really getting rich making fishing videos on YouTube? I mean I watch a few guys that I think are popular, but are they really raking in the cash? Is the cash from views or from sponsors/product placements?

I remember the days when professional baseball players were promoted by a thing called a baseball card.  When I was his junior high they offered a high tech skill class called typing but you had to use all your digits.
