So my buddy gave me a ML spinning rod specifically for ned rigs, drop shots, etc so I figured it was a good time to buy a budget reel for it.  Im looking for something in the 2000 size and under $75.  I have a Pflueger president on my MF rod and enjoy it.  Scheels has a Pflueger Purist on sale for $52.99 that I was looking at also, and maybe a Pfleuger Trion (40.99) but wanted to see what everyone recommends!

Thanks!

I like a smaller reel for drop-shot and other finesse - but a President XT-30 would be my suggestion. Little larger than a 2000, it's about a 2500 - and a little over your budget at $80.

The new Presidents aren't up to the standards of the older ones and the new Trions are lacking an anti-reverse switch. The Purist is a possibility, but I'm unsure of it.

For reference, the 25 size in Pflueger is around a 1000 size for other brands.

Just a shoutout to the members of this board, you don't see a lot of tackle or equipment snobbery at bassresource.com.   If someone wants a rod or reel between $300-$500, they will get lots of recommendations.  Likewise if someone wants a rod or reel between $30-$50 they will likewise get lots of recommendations.  I for one appreciate that.

I can recommend the Lew’s Mach 1 Speed Spin for $70 from TW. I’ve used it heavily the past couple years as my primary finesse reel, catching thousands of bass with it, and it has been solid. I have the 200 size (they don't make a 250).

I would also NOT recommend the Trion. I bought it as a replacement for my Pflueger Summit that I was very happy with, but the Trion didn’t even last one summer before it started breaking down - and it didn’t have an AR switch, which is a killer in my book.

I know these reels don’t receive a lot of love but check out the Piscifun Carbon X. I have two and I’m very pleased with mine. I’m also very fond of anything Daiwa and I’m planning on grabbing a Legalis LT.  Bulldog 1935  highly recommends “Tica” which are available online, they have one called “Galant spin X” in 2000 size that is within your budget. I should add you should stay away from Piscifuns lower end reels, I have one (bait cast) and although it was cheap definitely not built to last.

Imma keep telling you all every single time that the Daiwa Legalis (get the 2500) is an amazing reel at $70. It can't be beat here.

Consensus as of lately on the forums are that pfluegers are not what they used to be. I like my president and president XT. No problems for me yet.

Ive been hearing lots of good things about the Daiwa Revros. I got one of my friends into angling last year, and with my help he picked out a Revros for his first setup. It’s the 3000 size but it’s awesome and feels really nice for the price. They make a 2000 and 2500 as well. I believe they are $60. I regret not buying one myself and that’s saying a lot.

I'll say Lews or Diawa both in size 200. If you don't need an AR switch, Shimano Sahara 2500. All should work well.

Why a 2500 instead of a 2000?  Ive heard good things and lots of recs on the Legalis!

Daiwa Revros is a great reel for the price point. I looked at several reels last spring for the same techniques and went with it over Pfflueger and Shimano. Ended up finding a Fuego on sale about a month later so I use that more now, but the Revros is still used by friends and my 10 year old son who aren’t easy on equipment. Reel is impressive for the $.

I don’t own this reel. And this is coming from a Shimano guy who generally would put them first on most if not all accounts.

But I recently got to touch, play and cast around the Lew’s KVD 200. It’s a friend of mine and I didn’t take advantage of using it for a lot longer that day. Could have. My bad for not doing that but for my short time with it, it is smooth, light, tight as in not sloppy, and the anti reverse switch is nice and crisp, I manually close my nails and I loved the feel of it.

You have a million options. Just another. But coming from a Shimano guy I’d buy one.

I have a Daiwa Revros 2000 I've used for Ned rigs quite a bit and also bought one for my oldest son who fishes with Neds a lot. They do a nice job and perform above their price point imo.

I bought my B-I-L a Daiwa Revros about 4-1/2 years ago for his birthday.  Haven't heard any complaints about it yet.  He lives in Florida and fishes a lot more than I do so it has seen a fair amount of use.

Went and tried out the Revros at Scheels yesterday and definitely like the feel of it.  They dont have a Legalis there to try out but i think im going to give a Revros 2000 a try!

Daiwa is what I would recommend, but if your going to spend the money on a Legalis its worth spending an extra 5 or 10$ for the Exceler to upgrade from a hex pin handle to a thread in handle.  Both are nice, but the thread in handle has a better connection with the main gear.

We’ve got two Diawa Revros LT’s (1000 and 2500).  I’m very happy with these at their price point.  I picked up a Diawa Fuego and am enjoying that reel a lot.  Tucked in between those two, I would have to assume the Legalis is a solid reel also.

You could also consider the Abu Garcia reels - we’ve got a ProMax 30 that’s been a solid performer the past couple years.

I’ve been using the $50-$100 shimano spinning reels for years. They do everything I need them to do and are smooth and reliable. I’d look at the sedona and sahara.

In that price range my recommendations would be the Abu Garcia Elite Max 20 or the Lew’s Speed Spin SS20HS

Pflueger President.  I have a couple that I use several times a week.  Solid with a good drag.

I wouldn't go with the base President - but BPS/Cabelas currently has the President XT Limited Edition on sale for $49...go with that one instead.

Normal price is $79 - end of year, they always discount the Limited Editions...I picked up a 30 last year that I use on a M/F rod for shakey, neko and wacky rigs with 8# InvizX

I use an older President 25 (1000 size) for my finesse fishing with 10# hi-vis braid to 6# InvizX leader, but a 30 (2500 size) would also work fine.
