would like to lighten my load of plastic baits...

i  have a few bags of platics, in their original bags, that i carry in my shoulder bag. i am finding that a lighter bag would be nicer. it's a drag to sling that thing around, and i'm thinking i could carry only a few of each plastic bait, instead of whole bags of them.

 

just wondering if others have this issue? i'd like to put a few of each in plastic baggies, or maybe a plano type case. worried the baits will eat at the plastic compartments (so far, seems ok, but i've heard some baits can ruin other material). i'd prefer plano type boxes, since they seem neater. plastic bags --- i assume they would work, but they'd be less organized.

 

i'm guessing the plastics i get for bass (zoom, yum dingers) --- they don't seem gooey and scented like the baits i used for salt water... they seem like they do fine just sitting on their own. i'd be leery about the gooey, scented ones storing without leaking all over everything. 

 

btw, is there a reason these types of bait have no scent?

No issue here...look in my shirt pocket in the pic below. It's all I ever need to carry in the way of plastics on a trip. You know your waters - a few styles, a few colors, and some terminal tackle to fish it all with and you should be good. Heck, I've even bass fished for an entire month using just a single piece of plastic for every trip - no tacklebox whatsoever

My tournament/boat bag weighs between 20-25# on a given day, excluding drinks and rain gear.  Sometimes it makes it with me when I'm beating the bank.

 

I'll take one or two rods and everything I need in my pockets once in a while, but I feel terribly uneasy about it ?

 

As long as you don't expose the other plastics to Elaztech type baits (super stretchy stuff, namely Zman) you should be ok.  I would also avoid exposure to extreme heat for any amount of time.  Colors may run a bit, but otherwise store them however works for you!  I've unintentionally made some neat "custom" colors.

 

Zoom seems to prefer salt over scent.  You can buy an attractant to use if you would like.  Some brands use scent during production, some don't.

The problem I have when I remove plastics from their packaging is deformity. I even have to be careful about their placement in their original packaging because it can also lead to deformity. It's super frustrating.

 

For example I tried Senkos in a Plano and they all ended up with curled ends.

i think glen may (of this site) purposely deforms his plastics, in the same way you accidentally do... i forget which exact plastics he was referring to... it was in a video.. he feels it give them action, i think... seems odd to me, but that's what he likes...

I want it by design. I can make it different by popping the rod and how I retrieve the bait. I don't want it different in which I don't control and in which it always results in fewer to no strikes.

If you don’t add any Elaztech stuff like Zman, strike king 3X or anything elastic. The only problem is color breeding when you mix light color to dark color and if put too many in one bag it will become a little bit deformed. I have a bag of variety worm for dropshot. I have a few color of Senko or roboworm in each bag. One of my bag all plastic turn to orange color because of Senko pumpkin black flake. I also have a bag mix of Zman for Ned rig and so far not a lot of color breeding.

I am like @Team9ninenow only a few bag of plastic and a few hook in my pant pocket is enough.

FOMO kills guys. Have a half dozen different shapes and styles thrown together in a mix of half a dozen different colors. Been carrying my tackle bag like this for about 4 years now. Can't say I've ever had a color bleed issue, but if I did, so what. It would be to my advantage because I'd now be throwing something they've never seen and can't be bought in stores or online

I agree, but also very difficult to replicate if you want more!

This is common for some baits straight out of the package.  Flukes for example will often have a kinked tail.  You can dip them into hot water on the stove (carefully, for maybe 10-15 seconds) and form them back.

i'm confused on which plastics not to put next to each other. i looked at my plastics --- they're all zoom or yum dingers... i assume those all use the 'stretchy' type of plastics?? but is there some other brand or type that these should not be stored with...?

 

they seem ok in plano boxes, although i notice some plano boxes are sold as "worm proof."   the plastic baits haven't attacked my rod's finish.  i sometimes leave them and their hooks attached to the hook keeper of the rod.   they also seem to stay flexible and soft in or out of their packages.. and they don't weld themselves together... so, they're pretty  convenient.

 

my only other experience with plastic baits are salt water worms and grubs...i think they are zoom. they have scent on them, which i guess is the liquid they are stored in. left out, these worms dry out and become brittle..  you can't leave these out.....

FOMO = fear of missing out. Most people feel like they have to drag multiple outfits with them to cover every situation imaginable, and then multiple tackle boxes to have a bait for every situation they might encounter, and then fish like they have to catch every bass in the lake. 

 

I approach it from the other end of the spectrum. I want to bring as little as possible, giving me maximum mobility, and then try and catch everything I can using a limited number of baits in the most ways (presentations) possible.

re: the color transfer... i never would've really thought of that. but i stored a yum dinger foil with a bunch of grape colored worms... yeah, the foil yum is now this really gorgeous foil grape.... perfect, actually.

 

still wondering --- what kind of plastics do you keep these elastic baits AWAY from??? i haven't found that out yet..  they haven't attacked any of boxes or things...

You can pretty much store most of the brand in same bag, scent breed might be a good thing but a lot of brand, scent would be gone after a few used. 
The one that elastic or Elaztech stuffs and need to be stored separately  is mainly Zman products. If you ever own one you will know how much it can stretch without tearing. 
So far I only seen Elaztech with Zman, Strike king 3x (not regular), may be one or two more but if it advertised 3X 5x just test it out.

The only color I have ever noticed bleeding is red. I think all other colors are safe.

It probably doesn't matter to the fish, but it's a control issue for me. It's sort of like an infection, it can bleed from one bait onto another, and then that one bleeds onto another, etc.

You all are way over thinking this, 100 soft plastic worms on average weighs about 1 lb. That is 10 packages of 10/worms.

Sinkers and hooks you need for a shore outing plus plastic boxes may weigh about 1/2 lb.

Overkill - why lug around 1.5 pounds of tackle when you can easily get by on just 4 ounces worth?

What you can stuff in a pocket or two vs. what you'll have to carry in a backpack or tacklebag?

Carry a hundred worms with you when in reality you'll be lucky if you need and use 4 or 5?

Agree know one needs to carry 100 worms but the weight isn’t the reason not to. Cut the number in half is far more Tackle then needed. A Fanny pack is all a shore angler needs for terminal tackle and soft plastics.

The way I reduced weight was to carry fewer styles of plastics. I carry one bag of ribbon tail 6in. worms, one or two bags of stick worms, two bags of Flukes and two packages of RageTail Craws.  A Spike-It double marker gives me multiple color options without carrying extra baits.
