Super User DitchPanda Posted October 6, 2021 Super User Posted October 6, 2021 So I have several ponds near me that I've fished for 20 years. I've always been a power fisherman which equated to many memorable catches over the years but also my fair share of skunkings as well. So the last 2 years I've made it a point to get better at finesse fishing.....namely the Ned rig a light Texas rigs...and man what a difference it has made. Not only has it turned many 3-5 fish outings into 8-10 fish days but it has saved me from the dreaded fart squirrel dozens of times. On top of that I never thought I would enjoy the light tackle as much as power fishing but fighting a 2-4lb bass on light gear is crazy fun and challenging. 18 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted October 7, 2021 Super User Posted October 7, 2021 There's something to be said about light tackle, and finesse fishing. My favorite technique. Next up for ya, long pole, no reel, just a length of line and a float. Hang on cuz a 2lb bass on a long pole is crazy fun. Quote

I use a couple telescoping Shakespeare Durango rods for gill fishing sometimes and I've run into some large fish doing that. You think a 2lb bass fights in that scenario? Try a 5-6lb carp. Hook always straightens out or line breaks but that 30 or so seconds is like trying to hold onto a train. 2 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted October 7, 2021 Super User Posted October 7, 2021 Definitely all true! Sometimes if I'm not catching anything I'll toss a ned rig and catch a panfish or trout if nothing else. Beats getting skunked! 2 Quote

I have caught catfish, chain pick, which is like hauling in a boot full of water, LOL. I typically use gammy circle hooks when doing this type of fishing. Inspired by coarse fishing vids and articles I read over the years. Learned a lot from an elderly S. Korean gent back in the mid 2000s. Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted October 7, 2021 Super User Posted October 7, 2021 When I can find 'em in open water, I can't put that TRD bug down. I've caught everything from 5" bluegill to a 42" musky on it. Big musky, cats, and carp are a hoot on 6# line, but it's those big smallies that really make you feel like you've got a tiger by the tail. Quote
mrpao Posted October 8, 2021 Posted October 8, 2021 Lately I've been mainly using light and ultralight gear. So much more fun pulling in even a small one pound bass. Hook into a better fish and a battle is on. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted October 8, 2021 Super User Posted October 8, 2021 My best catching spinnerbait this year has been a 1/16 ounce single blade. I fish it on 6# line and if I don't get bites on that I call it a day. Quote
kingmotorboat Posted October 9, 2021 Posted October 9, 2021 I actually got my first finesse setup this past week. Have yet to catch a fish on it but yea. It’s a learning experience just on casting coming from a baitcaster all my life. Definitely something different. Yes you that have been in the zoom call read correctly, I now have a finesse rod ??
