Super User ChrisD46 Posted October 6, 2021 Super User Posted October 6, 2021 *Curious about Super Spook main line choice : Braid Main Line OR Straight Mono ? Quote
evilcatfish Posted October 6, 2021 Posted October 6, 2021 Straight mono for me, but I know plenty of people that throw them on braid. Just gotta experiment and find out what works best for your style! Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted October 6, 2021 Global Moderator Posted October 6, 2021 I like 30# braid. Gives a longer cast and a more solid hook up. Mike 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 6, 2021 Super User Posted October 6, 2021 Used 12 lb Big Game for all my top water lures under 1 oz. Top water over 1 1/2 oz used 25 lb Armillo. Currently using 11 lb Armillo Nylon for top water under 3/4 oz. Tom Quote
Cody28 Posted October 6, 2021 Posted October 6, 2021 I use a braid to leader just because my topwater rod is not just a topwater rod and braid to leader allows the setup to be more versatile. Otherwise I would probably lean towards straight mono. When fish are schooling and missing the walking bait a lot, I will sometimes even use fluro as my leader. Sounds weird, but the reason is when they miss and I set the hook, the flouro will sink the tip just a tad. This way my hook set digs into the water instead of flying away from the school. With poppers this would affect the action, but with super spooks it really doesn't. All that being said, braid to mono is what I use 99% of the time. 1 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted October 7, 2021 Super User Posted October 7, 2021 40 braid to an eighteen inch floro leader. 2 Quote
The Baron Posted October 7, 2021 Posted October 7, 2021 30# braid with about 3-4ft. of 12# BG leader for me. Casts very well, with good hook sets and no stretch so walking the bait is easy. My current spook/popper rod is a MH/moderate-fast crankbait rod and my landing percentage is very high (on the small fish we catch… most under 2#). If I were to rig on a fast action rod for some reason, I might try straight 12# BG. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted October 7, 2021 Super User Posted October 7, 2021 Straight mono. I have problems with braid getting fouled in the hooks sometimes on topwaters. It's the only rod I still use mono on. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted October 7, 2021 Super User Posted October 7, 2021 40# 832 to a short 15# AbrazX leader - I like the AbrazX for this as it's stiffer than InvizX or Tatsu...prevents the limp braid from getting tangled in the hooks. Super Spooks, WP-110/130...any of the larger top-waters. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 7, 2021 Global Moderator Posted October 7, 2021 Straight braid, no reason to use a leader. 1 Quote
Phil77 Posted October 7, 2021 Posted October 7, 2021 I've had good luck with both 30-40# braid and 12# and up mono. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted October 7, 2021 Super User Posted October 7, 2021 12 to 14 lb mono for lures that weigh what the super spook weighs. Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted October 7, 2021 Super User Posted October 7, 2021 14 lb Stren Original Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted October 7, 2021 Author Super User Posted October 7, 2021 Good replies with sound reasoning ... Both lines have merit . Quote
Super User MickD Posted October 10, 2021 Super User Posted October 10, 2021 Flouro line and leader has a higher specific gravity than water, therefore it sinks and with some surface lures, it will adversely affect the action of the lure, tending to pull it under. On my surface outfits I only use mono, either as line or leader on braid main line. Braid and mono, except for Gore fiber braids, have about the same specific gravity as water and don't sink like flouro. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted October 10, 2021 Super User Posted October 10, 2021 Straight braid for me. Makes walking the dog much easier. You do have to be careful not to let the lure stop too quickly in the air. If the lure stops with a jerk it will snap back and cause the lure to foul. Having it land with a little bit of slack in the line will usually prevent it. This goes for any lure, especially ones with treble hooks and braided line. 1 Quote
