Super User ChrisD46 Posted October 3, 2021 Super User Posted October 3, 2021 I'm looking for a shorter handle MH/F 6'6" ~ 6'9" bait cast rod made to throw super spooks on . I'll be standing at or near water surface level (bank / kayak) , so I like a shorter handle butt when working walk-the-dog surface lures and a rod to keep the rod butt from hitting under the arm and under 7' to keep the rod from hitting the water's surface . So far , I checked TW and didn't see anything immediately that checked the above boxes ... Your suggestions ? P.S. No Pistol Grip 5'6" rod suggestions please - that's too short. Quote
Super User GetFishorDieTryin Posted October 3, 2021 Super User Posted October 3, 2021 13 makes 6'7 MHs with a 12.5" handle for topwater/JBs. Check out the Omen Blacks, I think they're tough to beat for the $. Quote
GReb Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 Check out the nee Cashion Kayak rods they just released Friday nvm they are all 7’3 Quote

Phil77 Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Lews custom speed stick topwater special, Its 6'8 or 6'10 medium but feels more like a MH to me. I haven't thrown it in a yak but I've done pretty well with it on the big boat. 13 omen blacks are good rods, have a 7MH as a back up t-rig/jig. Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted October 4, 2021 Author Super User Posted October 4, 2021 Looks like I am heading in the direction of either a 6'6" M / F , MH / F or MH / Moderate Fast for bigger spooks and walking baits from 1/2 oz. to 1 oz. If I use braid I can go with a more forgiving rod - if I use mono line then a fast action rod will be better . Finding a light , 6'6" casting rod with the correct shorter butt handle is the first priority for walking baits then I'll see what kind of actions are available . Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted October 4, 2021 Super User Posted October 4, 2021 Unpopular opinion here. But for kayak fishing, which is 95% of what I do, I like all the same rods I'd use from the bank or a boat. I like the standard handle length for solid hooksets. If I've had a good day or jig or frog fishing I'll have a few little bruises in the ribs. ? 2 Quote

I do like a shorter handle rod for topwaters like spooks and poppers, but I don't have any special kayak rods. I think the notion is as much marketing as the technique specific rod thing. If someone likes shorter rear grips, then they like them. I have no need for them. Anyway, to answer the original question, I use a Saint Croix AVC62MXF. It is barely an inch shorter than the same spec 6' 6" version in front of the reel seat. It just has a shorter rear grip. 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted October 4, 2021 Super User Posted October 4, 2021 For years, I preferred shorter handled rods from a kayak. Now, not so much. The difference was that I used to fish from a low, molded seat position and wore a bulky PFD. Now, I fish from a raised sitting position and wear an inflatable. Quote

I do like short butts in general but it’s the second point here that really drives my obsession with them for kayak use. I don’t feel like I hold a combo unnaturally close to my body but it always takes easily a half an hour of fishing every time I get on the yak to sort myself out. I think an auto-inflate PFD is on the list for early next year, I will miss having a single pocket to hold my phone though. 1 Quote

evilcatfish Posted October 5, 2021 Posted October 5, 2021 What is your budget? On the low end, dobyns makes the Sierra in 6’8” length in m to h. On the higher end, the megabass p5 blade (or bandersnatch in previous generations) makes an excellent topwater rod just a note, since the title mentions super spook, I’m assuming you’ll be throwing top waters at least 1/2oz? Super User fishwizzard Posted October 5, 2021 Super User Posted October 5, 2021 I will throw this rod into the ring, the Daiwa BLX 63MHFB-FR. I was on the hunt for a short frog rod and it's what I ended up with. It's an amazing rod in a lot of ways and I have caught dozens and dozens of bass on it both with frogs and medium sizes walking baits like the PopMax. It's taper reminds me of the Loomis MBR rods, but maybe a tough slower. Despite being part of their "Limber Graphite" lineup, it's pretty sensitive. I also use mine for the occasional swimjig and it gives good feedback in terms of tail-thump. The current price I linked is less then I paid and I am thinking of picking up a second one for my yak arsenal. 13 hours ago, Choporoz said: Check out Rogue Fishing phone tether. I now have decide if I will dedicate myself to braid with this technique OR go with Big Game #15 mono ? Braid could work with a M/F rod while mono needs to bump up to MH/F rod . Quote

I think it's like 18". I'll bang it on my seat if I'm sitting. 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted October 6, 2021 Super User Posted October 6, 2021 I took a hacksaw to the handle of a 7 foot rod to make it about 6'9". I bought the rod on clearance , nice rod but wanted a shorter handle . Afterwards it was tip heavy so I put a chair leg rubber cap on the end with a couple of nickles inside to balance it out nicely . 1 Quote
