DINK WHISPERER Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Hey all, I am having a hard time mounting my new HumminBird transducer on my 1996 Astro 1850 DCX. What's confusing me are the instructions in the installation manual. It wants you to use a plum line and find the angle of the transom. But how can i if the boat is on the trailer and the angle changes depending on how high the trailer is jacked up? It also says to mount at least 15" away from the propeller and i only have about 13". My boat like many Astros has limited room on either side of the motor and than it has those "wings" on each side. Can someone please help me with this? Where should i mount it and how do i get my transom angle? THANKS Quote
NBR Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 I have a 1989 or 90 18CDX. My transducer for the console sounder is mounted to shoot through the hull right in the center of the pad. Unless it is very very deep mine gives me depth at 50MPH. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted March 1, 2010 Super User Posted March 1, 2010 Which Humminbird unit did you get? Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted March 2, 2010 Author Posted March 2, 2010 Which Humminbird unit did you get? I got the 581i combo. My last unit had the transducer in the bilge but i did not like it. Instructions say find the transom angle and adjust the transducer mount knuckles according to the number in inches of the transom angle. I do not understand why this is necessary if the transducer is adjustable anyway you set it. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted March 2, 2010 Super User Posted March 2, 2010 You probably will not get satisfactory on-plane performance with it transom mounted. A correctly installed transducer inside the hull is the best option. The little notches in the transom bracket will not let you level it unless you start it in the correct orientation. You can start in the #1 position and start tightening the bolt to see of any of the positions available will let it be level (parallel with the bottom of the hull ) IF that doesn't work, you have to take it all apart and try another number. My boat needed the #2 slot. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted March 2, 2010 Author Posted March 2, 2010 I am not worried too much about on plane performance since i rarely use sonar anyways. Once my transducer is on the bracket it allows me to rotate it freely to level it with the hull bottom. So that is all that the transom angle is needed for, bottom hull alignment of the transducer?
