After forty years of bass fishing, I've heard and read many things which I consider to be completely false regarding our sport.                       Some of these things were written by some well known writers years ago, other things I heard from other fisherman.                   Here's a few " non truths", that I've proven to be wrong myself.                                                       1. Hair or bucktail jigs only work in cold water. False.                        2. Plastic worms won't work in colder water. False.                      3. Surface and topwater baits won't work in cooler water. False.                                                             4. Spinning tackle can't land good size fish. False.                         5. Spincasting reels will never land good size fish. False.               6. Dark colored soft plastic baits are always best in dark or off colored water. False.                           7. The drag on a baitcasting reel is really not important. Always crank it down tightly. False.                                              8. Big bass can't be landed on light mono line of 6 or 8lb strength. False.                                          9. A bright colored lure is always the best for night fishing. False.                                                           10. You need a 500 dollar rod to feel a soft jig bite. False.               These are just a hand full of falsehoods I've learned through the years. Some of them are still being taught even today.            Do you agree or disagree? And, please post some non truths that you've learned yourself over time.                                     Let's clear the air.....

I definitely agree that spinning and finesse combos should not be looked down upon, that's a vital strategy for certain conditions.

Also, Senkos should stop being looked down upon as 'too easy' or a 'beginner lure'. Its a great lure that works, enough said. :)

Beetle Spins are for kids .

Night fishing is better during the new moon . {this one might be true in clear water , but not in the waters I frequent}.

Me when I was young asking a veteran angler  "Do you ever fish over there?"  His answer " No . Why would I ?  There is nothing over there"   He was either wrong or a big fat liar .

I worked with a young guy that told me he would never fish a Beetle Spin. He called them a beginner's lure also. I had to laugh. I still carry some along with me, and they've worked well over the years. Everyone is into the Ned rig now. Take a Ned bait, add a spinner arm, and there's very little difference.

I agree with you 100%. The other season ago, I had one of the long time regulars from down the river that I’ve known for years, tell me, because the fish warden told him, that the only lure he needed to fish the river with was a firetiger crankbait. He started doing that and as of my last talking to him he’s taken a number of skunking. And he still still has a strong belief in it as far as I know. Well no doubt a Bomber Firetiger crankbait is a good lure and will catch smallies. End all do, do all? Not hardly.
But a good lure, yes.

Being a fish warden doesn’t mean you know anything about Smallies.

I think @Glenn did a video on something like this recently.

Seems much of what we do or don't do, can be so location, season, condition and even personally specific, that hard and fast 'rules' can be tough to apply across the board.

One thing's for sure though,

putting red treble hooks on baits is just plain foolish.

Jerk baits only work best in cold water…False!

Bass will only hit a frog early and never in open water…False!

Top water bite dies when the sun rises above the trees….False!

“Finesse” fishing with spinning gear is best when the bite gets tough…False!

Fluorocarbon fishing line, bass tournaments and bed fishing are the bane of the fishing world…False!

Id like to add, use smaller lures to catch smallies. I've caught a pile of big smallmouth on 3/4 oz football jigs on 17lb test line.

Here's a couple more: live bait takes less skill, and is only for beginners. False.                                       Inline spinners( Mepps) are only mainly for trout fishing. False

When nothing else seems to be working, I will throw an inline spinner. I can't remember a time I've ever been skunked on one.

I don't see too many of these perpetuated here, but maybe elsewhere.  Two terms that make my skin crawl are: "reaction bite" and "confidence bait".

J Francho, I agree. Every bite is a reaction bite of some kind, otherwise, it wouldn't be a bite to begin with.

If you rely on moon cycles to plan your freshwater fishing trips then you should also call your local tarot and ouija board experts.

My wife use to read cards and do astrology charts as a business...and she don't believe in either.

When the wind blows out of the east, fishing is least. When the wind blows out of the west, fishing is best.
