My wife doesn't like to fish and the kids are grown and gone. I just fish by myself mostly now and enjoy the gift my dad passed down to me....love of the outdoors and the water. I find that when I take my fishing buddy I spend more time trying to put him on fish than I do. I guess that what friends do.

She sleeps about 90% of the time.  Really the only time she perks up is if she hears another dog barking or a duck lands nearby.

I'll be perfectly honest.  I rarely do either one.  I find trolling to be very boring and its difficult to do in a bass boat without rod holders.  I rarely use live bait other than a few times in the spring when I'm crappie fishing or if I go walleye fishing with my parents.  I do not use either tactic to specifically target bass.

I'm not against either one in terms of strategies though.  Trolling is extremely effective and efficient when using a tiller boat targeting walleyes.  I have done this many times.  Live bait has its place in the fishing world too but I don't like buying it and trying to keep it alive.  I did a lot of slip bobber fishing with lighted glow bobbers at night with my brother for walleyes years ago too and it was not only effective, but very relaxing.  We'd fire up some music, drink beer, and wait for a lighted bobber to go down.

Just goes to show how difficult it is to share the boat with someone.  When you do find that person fishing can be an absolute blast regardless of how you fish or even if you catch fish.  I have a good friend that I have been fishing with for 25 years.  We have never tournament fished together but we are out most every weekend and we go to Michigan every year (18 years straight) and we have started going to Florida every February.  Having been a guide for so many years, I know how to treat someone on the back deck and when I take someone new, I make sure they have a good time.  Also, we NEVER have any requirements about paying for fuel, always be on time, bring your own food and drink and most of all, have fun.

Fish solo. Basically all I’ve ever done for years because of situations like yours. I’m not gonna have some DB ruin my time out. Once a guy was late, real late, I took off without him. If I say get there  “before sunup” I pretty much mean before sunup.

I have grandsons that will go with me. They stay over the night before. They are up before me at times. Boat and truck are prepped the night before. We are basically just pulling out of the driveway.

....at home doing something else!

In a boat I could see wanting a partner more than not. On shore, I sometimes go with someone else, but we often split up anyways. It is cool having someone around depending on the situation. Surf fishing with a freind was a blast, we even kept score.

Kayak fishing, not sure. Another person would motivate me to get up and go, but once we launch, eh I dunno. I've done it a few times and it was cool. And it's good for safety. I'm not leaving until I'm done, so be ready for that or drive yourself.

At the Delta I'd welcome a friend anytime probably.

I always drive myself bank fishing because one friend leaves once he's out of beer. I don't have time for drinking when I fish. That's for after!

I think it's all about how you treat other people. My fishing buddy, who I would take a bullet for, is what I guess you would call a "flake". When we plan a trip, and I tell him we are leaving at 6:30, then that is what I mean, and he knows it. If he isn't here, then I go without him. He may text me at 9:00 and say, can you pick me up at the dock. Guess what? I do. Because he is my friend. This goes for golfing, hunting, etc. but I won't let it effect our friendship. I know it was probably never actually said, but in Tombstone when Doc went to take up for Wyatt, Turkey Creek Johnson asked him why he did it. He said, Wyatt is my friend. Turkey said, hell Doc, I got lots of friends. Doc said, I don't. That is how I live my life. I don't have a lot of "friends", I have guys that would drive across the country to help me if I needed it. In the grand scheme of things, fishing is pretty much on the bottom rung.

I've got friends like this.  It doesn't bother me once I figure out that this is what they're like.  The trick is to just accept people for who they are.

So I'll invite the flakes out and I'll never expect them to show up.  And on the rare occasion they do actually show up, it's often a real treat!  Good people are hard to find in this world, and the older you get, the harder they become to find.  So you've got to cherish and cultivate the friendships you have.  And good people can be heavily flawed people.  Just don't plan your day around them, and you'll be fine.

Well looks like I may have spoke too soon when I responded last September. One of my bass buddies turned out to be a flake after all. He's backed out on me 4 times in 3 weeks..worst part is 3 of those times he asked me to go then cancelled. Asked him this morning if he wanted to have beers tonight and he said no because we are going fishing in the morning. A few hours later he asked if we could go Sunday instead so he could have people over for drinks at his place. I told him you can do whatever you want, I'm going on my own from now on because I'm sick of this blow off *** so I'm done making plans with you.

I enjoy fishing alone.  It's also great when my Wife comes along.  Occasionally one or both of my Grandsons will want to go...and actually have time to go.  3 in my boat is a crowd, but I enjoy fishing with 1 or both of them.   I've got a co worker that occasionally goes.  He's got a boat too.  Sometimes he goes with me, sometimes we'll meet somewhere at the lake.   Sometimes he struggles to catch bass.  I don't mind showing him where on the map to go.  Last time we went together we caught 30 between us including a 5 pounder and a couple 4 pounders.   The last time we were both at the same lake, at the same time he wasn't catching any.  I sent him a screenshot of where I was at, waited, and let him fish in front of me.  Him and his cousin that was fishing with him caught 4 within 5 minutes.  I caught a 4 pounder right behind them.   Him and I are going tomorrow morning to different lakes.  We both promised to text fish pictures.  I told him if he got a picture of Earnest T Bass (from the Andy Griffith show) instead of pictures of Largemouth and spotted bass things were tough.

My half-full glass is what makes me say all of the above is why we need to be thankful for the good ones. I'm so fortunate to have an awesome fishing buddy. We get along great, go out for beers, fish the same style etc...

He's a member here, although I won't point him out.

Don't be afraid to tell the good ones how much you appreciate their friendship.

Thank you for being such a great friend bud

I fish 99% of the time with my 11 year old son.... the rest of the time we wife and daughter will go.... My son is even my team partner for tournaments.

like someone said above.... the majority of so-so "friends" flake. I will usually invite them just to say I did and then give them crap forever because they flaked..... I don't really want to fish with anyone else anyways.... if I wanted to hang out with a bunch of dorks I would golf.

Man, 100%. My boy is my partner. I don’t care to go with most anyone else including the wife. Occasionally my daughter comes and I love that too, but my son and I fishing tournaments is the best. He’s 12.

I've matured since this post.  haha

now, i just do me.  if they want to fish, they meet me at the dock and find me.  if not, solo-city fishing which is perfectly fine.  I have made new friends and they all have different timelines, needs, wants, joys, etc.  and it's all good by me.  I have explored new spots with a few of them and found a few honey-holes.

fishing is just that.  trying to find enjoyment.  I am not gonna sweat the details anymore.

I wrote this comment almost a year ago, and the answer is the same today, and for the rest of my life. The best fishing partner a man can have is his wife. If you are fortunate your wife will be your best friend as well, which will make your fishing trips more enjoyable.

I wasn’t fortunate in that department. Pretty much can’t stand my wife.

I have a friend from my childhood who, over the years, has become a total flake in all aspects. He just flaked on my family again Wednesday. It's a 90+% of the time thing. So I have completely cut communication with no explanation and blocked him from everything. Do you homie.

I'm trying to grasp everything in this thread. Lol

I've had the same best friend and bass fishing partner for over 40 years and the same wife for 37 years who loves to pan fish.

What's up with all these flakes?

Man the dude was just trying to vent about his fishing buddy flaking out on him over and over again, goes to show that an Internet forum isn’t the best place to vent about your personal problems ? to the OP I understand, sometimes it’s nice to have a reliable friend to share those experiences with and not having that can be frustrating but hey atleast we have bassresource. Even though I don’t post a lot this place means a lot to me,I spend alot of my time here and I don’t regret it or feel that it’s wasted time one bit.
