How would you fix this spool (that was dropped)?

Hi guys,

while I was organising some tackle, I accidentally dropped a spare 1016 G1 spool on the floor and as luck has it it landed in the perfect angle to put a significant dent into it.

I am curious how you would attempt to fix it (if this is possible) and how much bend in the spool is acceptable without harming the breaking system of the reel.

I’d start with some 600 grit sandpaper to feather out the deformation and work my way up incrementally to 1000/1200 until the spool operates correctly. As long as the shaft is still aligned, I think it should be fine.

I got some pretty decent result by bending the inside out (with a tubed tool) and then rolled the spool on some flat metal surface. Result is actually pretty decent. It sounds pretty normal. Lets see how it will behave on the water. ?

replace it.  tolerances are tight and it could cause other damage over time by being even slightly out of whack.

As a couple others have said - replace it.

 

No matter how good it looks or acts in the short run, in the long run you chance damaging other parts...especially the brakes...a little spent now prevents even more spent later.

that isn't a bad dent.....and it's not terribly difficult to fix. Just tedious. The trick is heat and rolling with hard rubber tips pushing from one side and rolling the other. The lip on Daiwas spools is very thin and brittle and can break off if you aren't careful. Did the same thing to a morethan spool.
