I’m eyeing up one of the Abu Ike Signature Delay series baitcasting rods.  It’s their model MIKECW64-5, which is a 6’4” Medium/moderate-fast glass crankbait rod.  I’m thinking this might serve well as a squarebill/shallow crankbait/popper rod for canoe fishing.   Does anyone have this rod, or a similar rod from the same series?  Any thoughts on whether a 6’4” rod would be too short if I was lucky enough to snag a “good” bass (which is 3lbs+, in my world)?

Too short for what? Length doesn't dictate strength of a rod. The only issue I see pertaining to length after you hook a fish is crossing over your bow if you need, and you sitting too far back in the canoe

I have that rod. It does have a nice action for topwaters and keeping the fish pinned. That's all I really used it for. You can get away with using braid since it's quite soft and forgiving.

TL/DR: More data (information) is needed to give a well reasoned response to that question.

=============================

Millions of bass (that are bigger than 3 lbs) have been landed on rods shorter than 6'4". I have landed many myself up to over 10 lbs. With that said, I don't currently use any rods that are less than 6' 10" and generally prefer rods that are 7' to 7'7". The thing is, that there are so many different variables that could make a shorter rod useful for some anglers, that I can't simply dismiss shorter based only on their length. Canoe/kayak fishing could certainly be one of those uses where a shorter rod could be useful. Longer rods could be problematic in some situations.

Chances are that someone before you has figured a decent way to deal with many, if not most of the constraints you are facing. If you can articulate those constraints, you'll likely get some good feedback on how others have successfully dealt with them. In this case, details matter. Without them, the accuracy of the responses you get will likely not be all that useful.

Hope you make out great with it. I’ve been eying that also. Maybe a Christmas suggestion. I like that slower action for CB’s. Good luck.

I picked up a 7'6M and the ike reel on local marketplace for pretty cheap. Guy said it was to soft for his liking and said the reel was to finicky for him. I oiled the brake ring and played with the settings in the backyard to dial it in. Seems like it will be good crankbait rod.

Caught a few bass with it this afternoon. the feel reminds me of an older St Croix Mojo Glass rod. I was throwing a booyah xcs square bill, the rod has plenty of flex to keep them pinned. I already have a dedicated square bill rod so this one might be used for deep cranks. Got the rod and the 6 speed Ike baitcaster for $200 on FB so pretty pleased so far.

It has a lure rating of 5/8". No way you're throwing deep cranks on it

5 and 6xd's plus DT10's nowhere near 5/8. It's a broomstick so I think it could handle an ounce if I wanted to try.

Now you've got my wheels turning, I'm going to throw a 1.5oz glide bait on it tomorrow just for fun. I view lure ratings as suggestions anyways.I've thrown way heavier lures than is suggested and haven't broke a rod or lost a fish yet.

Of course it's a suggestion. But it also works both ways, and rods can be overrated.

A 6XD is a full ounce.

A DT10 isn't what people think of when you say "deep diver".

I dont crank below 15 ft. It's not productive for me and a Tokyo rigged paddle tail with a 3/4 bullet weight thins the school very quick when they are 20 ft or below holding on the bottom. So yeah my idea of a deep diver is 10-20 feet. My 6xd's sure dont feel or cast like they weigh an ounce.

Heading to the boat ramp. I will throw a 1.5 oz  glide bait, a 6th sense 500DD and 300DD 1.75 and 1oz. Going to use 30lb Daiwa J braid. Never thrown the cranks but my neighbor says the 500 will go 20 plus deep and the 300 is right at 20. Pretty sure the fiberglass broomstick is up to the challenge but I'm gonna have Popeye arms by noon.

That lavender Shad you have tied on is a nice pattern (a favorite). Many of the blue gills in my lake are of the lighter colored. Washed out look down to a pinkish purple. Good luck. I have my eye on that Ike delay also. Or move on to the MH version for 5/8+.

Threw it for three hours before I finally spooled it on a 2+ oz paddle tail that's normally used for striper on an umbrella rig. Guess I'll have to tie to the spool next time or get better tape. Handled like I thought it would, like I said the lure rating is just a suggestion. It has plenty of flex so will have to try with some other moving baits.

My intention will most likely never exceed the 3/4 oz. Maybe 1 oz. But do intend to throw a lot of 5/8 to 3/4 with it.

I’ll have to buy both Med. and Med. Hvy and send one back. I’m so anal I’ll have to hash and mull it over.

I cant speak for the MH but the 7-6M is more than capable for 3/4 and up.
