Super User scaleface Posted September 25, 2021 Super User Posted September 25, 2021 Some of my reels have that geary feeling through the handle during the retrieve . I have cleaned and greased the gears and the worm drive . One of the reels is a two year old Lews Tournament MB .It was a super smooth reel but now has been relegated to a backup position . Any other suggestions on how to get the reels feeling like new again ? Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted September 25, 2021 Super User Posted September 25, 2021 The greatest satisfaction is likely to come from professional work. I had a reel a few years ago that was "geary". After all my efforts failed, a professional got it working perfectly. Sometimes you just gotta do what you just gotta do. ? jj 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted September 25, 2021 Super User Posted September 25, 2021 Cheapest route is to replace all internal bearing but that only maybe 10-20% of the course. Worst case scenario is to replace gear and pinion (30-50 bucks) that most of the geary feel related to. 1 Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted September 25, 2021 Super User Posted September 25, 2021 Thicken up the lube. Drag grease for the gears and 80wt. oil (lower unit lube) for the frame and handle bearings. Always use a very light oil for the spool bearings. oe 2 Quote
newapti5 Posted September 25, 2021 Posted September 25, 2021 Worn gear set and bearings is the root of that problem. One of the cheap fixing routes is to put on a pair of thick EVA handle knobs; that'll dampen a lot of the unwanted vibration. And for future reference, maybe lower the drag. Setting a drag too high will definitely shorten the smooth period of any gears. 1 Quote
Reel Posted September 25, 2021 Posted September 25, 2021 Another thing that shortens the smooth period of any gears is turning the handle to stop the lure in midair before it reaches it's target 1 Quote

newapti5 Posted September 25, 2021 Posted September 25, 2021 Gear set: part 40 pinion gear, and part 44 drive gear. If you change these two, usually it'll solve the majority of the problem. If not, then you might also want to change the bearings, such as part 89, 55, and 24. (This is the schematics for Tournament Pro, but Tournament MB is similar.) 1 Quote

People actually do that? I wonder if those are same people who try foolishly insist on inserting a loop through a small hook eye that you’d practically have to make a crease at the end of the loop to fit it through the eye to tie the palomar. If I had a boat and saw them do that, I’d kick them so lucky I don’t have one. If they were fishing with me on the bank, I just might have to push them into the lake, lol. Quote

waymont Posted September 25, 2021 Posted September 25, 2021 My old Curado 70 (silver one) got geary after about 2 months. Never figured it out. 1 Quote
newapti5 Posted September 25, 2021 Posted September 25, 2021 4 hours ago, Linewinder said: I'm learning here. Please elaborate. How does drag setting affect longevity of gears? The gears become worn out gradually because of all the winding pressure put on them. Apparently, the more pressure you put on them, the faster they became worn out and lost the smooth feeling. That maximum pressure is exactly what force you set your drag to, plus the extra impact force during hookset. So, the higher the drag, the higher the gears pressure, and the faster they became worn out. Quote

evo2s197 Posted September 25, 2021 Posted September 25, 2021 Agree send it in, being a lews there are a plethora of parts available because they are a popular platform and most models are easy to work on if you decide to do it Yourself. Quote
jbrew73 Posted September 26, 2021 Posted September 26, 2021 80% of my Lew’s reels were geary even after sending them back to Lew’s. The only ones that held up were the original tournament pro models. Try one of the new P2 models or switch brands. Quote

I had the same problem but when I switched grease to cals grease, the geary feeling went away... 1 Quote
