Favorite Fall Topwater

My favorite topwater, hands down, is a Spook, but when the leaves start changing color, nothing produces for me like a buzzbait.  I know there are a lot of WhopperPlopper fans here. Do you stick with it come fall, or switch to something else? What are some other, productive baits you guys go to in the fall?

I like poppers and floating jerk baits

Spook and popper are both very good at times. Also a fluke worked basically on top on a light wire hook can be good. But a buzz bait is hands down the best for me. In fact its my favorite topwater period.

I always have a good time fishing a buzzbait, but the Pompadour has become my favorite over the last few years.

Buzzbait when it’s calm and around light/moderate cover... Plopper/Choppo when there is a little wind/chop and no grass.

Buzzbait and WTD topwaters are king in the fall when it's all about covering water.

Late Fall through late Winter…

Start with a hula popper if the weather is stable and go up in size as it warms if the bite slows. 
 

If a front came through a day or so before I won’t even try.

Yeah, the buzzbait is the "reel deal" when the water cools. I like the Chug Bug, Spook, Plopper. I have an old Frontrunner lure that you can tie ahead of a Spook that makes it look like it's fleeing the Spook. I have a bass pattern Spook that I intend to try it with soon. I recently saw a video about how good a Bomber Long A is when used as a wakebait. I've had one for years and never caught a thing off it as a jerkbait. After seeing that video (Bassgeek on YouTube) I moved it to my topwaters box.

WTD are my favorite period but will use whatever is working.

A spook, for sure.  My recent favourite is a Yo-Zuri 3D pencil popper 100mm.  I run it on 30# braid with a 12# mono leader on an Okuma EVX MH / mod-fast crankbait rod.  It casts great and I find the walking action just as fascinating as the fish do.  I prefer the double hook spooks to the triples - just that much less to remove or get mixed up in the net on a good ‘er.

 

That said, I tried buzzbaits for the first time yesterday.  I will definitely be throwing those again!

Buzzbaits in the fall and if they don't produce the whopper popper gets wet quickly.

We have a few of those days coming in the 5 day forecast and I am going to give it some serious time too.
