Super User A-Jay Posted September 22, 2021 Super User Posted September 22, 2021 I started casting with two hands as kid and never stopped. Carried it right through into surf casting on the coast and then back into my bass fishing when I retired from the service. Tried casting with one arm a few times. Feels completely unnatural to me. Like welding an axe or swinging a bat, one handed. I'm all over the place. So yup - I'm a double fisted caster . . . https://youtu.be/8x9A8IP3j7w?t=10 A-Jay 1 Quote
BassNJake Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 Practice is what helps with this. Like @islandbass indicated, this is easier if you cast with 2 hands on the regular Even though my thumb seems stupid on the other hand, it's much easier than writing left handed 1 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted September 27, 2021 Super User Posted September 27, 2021 Yesterday I went camping and the river was down . I grabbed a rod and preceded to get skunked . So I practiced my casting . I did real good lefthanded , zero back-lashes, distance and accuracy was there . Surprised the heck out of me . I'm right handed but swing a ball bat lefthanded , so I guess thats why I was able to do it first time trying . Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted September 28, 2021 Super User Posted September 28, 2021 If the left thumb is on the reel, the right hand becomes an assist. Two handed casting is a good thing. Quote
JoeDeal55 Posted September 29, 2021 Posted September 29, 2021 I only used spinning rods growing up and I always casted with my right hand and used my left as a guide on the bottom of my rod, and then retrieved with my left hand. Used a baitcaster for the first time this year and it was right hand retrieve. I would cast it right handed but then I would have to switch hands to retrieve. That annoyed me to no end and almost turned me against baitcasters. Also, trying to cast and "work" the rod with with my left hand was awkward. So I decided to buy a left handed baitcaster to give it one more try and its perfect! I can cast and work the rod with my right hand and reel with my left without ever having to switch hands. It only sucks that most baitcaster combos only come right handed. If something tragic were to happen to my right hand or arm or something I would have to learn to throw lefty but hopefully that never happens. 1 Quote
throttleplate Posted September 29, 2021 Posted September 29, 2021 so far i am doing pretty good using my opposite arms. 2 Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted September 30, 2021 Super User Posted September 30, 2021 I went fishing today and tried casting left handed for a short time. I was casting a 1/2 ounce spinnerbait. It just doesn't feel right or natural doing it that way. I can make a short pitch and do okay but I can't get it right casting left handed. No we didn't catch any fish either. 1 Quote
lynxcat Posted September 30, 2021 Posted September 30, 2021 Bunch of different ways to cast a lure...proficiency can vary tremendously in style. I find I try to use more hip rotation in non-dominant casting as my arm/wrist coordination isn't as refined. Quote
fishhugger Posted September 30, 2021 Posted September 30, 2021 i agree w you... learning to fly cast with your other hand would be super hard, imho.... but the other casting - that should be fine, even bait casting... he said.... Quote
HaydenS Posted September 30, 2021 Posted September 30, 2021 I use lefty reels, but I'm right hand dominate. I'm the only person I know who uses lefty reels, so when I want to pick up something one of my buddies are throwing, I have to use a righty reel. I've gotten pretty good at casting with my opposite. Certainly can't skip or anything using my opposites though. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted September 30, 2021 Super User Posted September 30, 2021 I found myself shore fishing in a spot a few times that had a bush along the shore to my left that I could easily cast around right handed. My first few attempts of the day may go into the bush but after a few attempts I can do it acceptably. Definitely not as good as I can left handed. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted October 2, 2021 Super User Posted October 2, 2021 I taught myself to cast with my left hand just for something to do. Sad thing is I can cast a baitcaster better with my nondominate hand than I can a spinning rod with my dominant hand. Allen Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted October 2, 2021 Super User Posted October 2, 2021 When it comes to getting accurate with spinning, I'm still working on my dominant hand. Also, my depth perception ain't what it used to be. 1 Quote

Not overhanging limbs or tree tops that are laying in the water, but the tops of living trees never to be found by a human. It’s usually a good sign to head home 2 Quote
MrFishALot Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 If I HAD to then I probably would but even watching YouTube and seeing people cast with opposite hand it just "feels" weird. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted October 14, 2021 Super User Posted October 14, 2021 I usually fish by myself . so I position the boat for me . I dont have to switch arms , I have been doing it a bit , just for kicks . Quote
throttleplate Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 start using your off hand to brush your teeth, eat, and wipe your rear, this will start to prepare you to get accustumed to the switch for casting. Quote
QED Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 Or break your strong side collarbone in bike racing pileup and then you'll learn to use your off arm/hand pretty quickly. ? Quote
billmac Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 I can cast left handed (non-dominant) with a baitcaster. It didn't take me nearly as long to learn as it did to learn how to cast a baitcaster period. I don't think I've ever tried casting a spinning reel left handed, but I don't even like casting a spinning reel with my right hand. 1 Quote
txchaser Posted October 17, 2021 Posted October 17, 2021 Only a backhand cast. Didn't really think about it till this thread. No problem with either hand. Anything else, a total train wreck. Quote
