Super User Darth-Baiter Posted September 17, 2021 Super User Posted September 17, 2021 I had to do it. I got rid of a bunch of archery tools and that $ was burning a hole in my PayPal pocket. I just noticed a rod I’ve been eyeballing is back in stock. The Phenix Recon Elite spinning rod. I like my current Dobyns Kayden but I just had this itch. I love everything Phenix has put in my hands. The rods just feel “crispy”. Not sure that makes any sense. im going to put a 1000 series reel on the Kayden and try to harass crappies with it. The noticeable slower action should be perfect. I have the 723 on the way. 7’2” medium extra fast. I’m a drop shot fool with the slightly beefier Phenix Maxim rod I have. Two finesse setups are perfect on my kayak to supplement my casting setups. I can’t wait. Ready for fall drop shot action. 3 Quote
RTipton Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 It gets me all of the time, too! The thought of trying 'just one more' rod, reel, etc is a never-ending dance for me. I would love to hear what your thoughts are on it once you have had time to use it. I hardly ever see any of those rods locally so I havent been able to wrap my paws around one. I am eyeballing spinnings rods now, and they are on the list. 1 Quote
Lead Head Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 There is ALWAYS something else out there that you want to try. If you really want to get your mind blown by possibilities start building your own rods. Near limitless possibilities for blanks combined with the ability to customize to your personal preferences leaves you wanting to try everything. It did me anyway... Quote

A coworker brought me his rod building stuff to see , “if I would like the new hobby”. He spent an hour explaining his love for it. The tools, the stacks of blanks, etc. I had heard enough, I put it all back in his truck. he thinks his divorce could be partly blamed on it. My buddy obsesses over things. Building furniture, tinkering with cars.. he said he would sneak out of bed at night to go glue things. Haha no thanks I’ll buy a few and hope to call it good. Quote
Lead Head Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 It can certainly be addictive when its just for personal use. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted September 17, 2021 Super User Posted September 17, 2021 The itch is horrible. Recently purchased a 5wt fly rod and ordered the reel for it. Reel that came was for a 3/4 wt rod. I check, and yup my fault for not paying close enough attention when I ordered the reel. Did I exchange it for a 5/6 reel? Nope. Ordered a 4 wt rod and then the 5/6 reel. So now my one new rod is two new rods. There are a ton of good rods at many price ranges. Reading about how good they all are just makes a person want to one try. Most of the time you don't need it. Not sure it can all be blamed on the Bait Monkey. 1 Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted September 18, 2021 Super User Posted September 18, 2021 I recently cleaned house so to speak on my soft plastics and gave a box with at $200-$300 worth of baits to my buddy whose just starting out. Since then I've bought 5 bags of craws...3-4 packs of TRDs...2 30pks of yum dingers and 5 bags of roboworms. 1 Quote

Sometimes the act of purchasing new gear can be as euphoric as fishing with it. 1 1 Quote

I recently received this anonymous text: ;~) The Bait Monkey merely offers to provide a unique service. Whether or not you wish to utilize that service is up to you. Warm Regards, Bait Monkey 2 Quote
Lead Head Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 Lol, as insistent as the Bait Monkey is, he don't have anything on the Gear Gorilla. He comes busting through walls like the Kool-aid Man and starts beating his chest like King Kong. My wife has given up trying to chase him away with sticks and knives, she has taken up firearms now... 2 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted September 20, 2021 Super User Posted September 20, 2021 If I walk into a store and there is a rack of fishing rods there, I'm going to look. I don't let silly questions like "Do I really need another fishing rod?" bother me all that much. Pawn shops for sure, you can find decent bargains at pawn shops sometimes. A cautionary tale - sometimes the rods at the pawn shop don't feel "right". Maybe they are " grey market " i.e. stolen & pawned - I don't know. If I find a rod at the pawn shop that doesn't have the right feel to it, I won't buy it. Maybe a wife pawned some fishing rods because she was steamed at her husband - don't laugh, stuff like that happens. When I was in college, a friend of mine returned to the dorm on a Sunday evening driving a 6 year old Porsche. Turns out some guy took his secretary to Cancun and his wife found out and sold his Porsche when he was away - for $500 - to some nameless college student. Quote
