The metal detector cop stopped my bag in the xray machine and took a really long look, then she stared at me.  She didn't find anything but school stuff and an old Bassmaster Magazine.

Remember the chrome reverse, American mags,Moon discs and Spokes on the cars and trucks.Chrome on the dash boards and steering wheels.

My parents were gone one day and my older brother went off with one of his buddies and left the keys to his 66 Chevelle on the bookcase.I snatched the keys and took off, went down the road ,picked up my buddy Deacon(his nickname after Deacon Jones of the LA Rams).14 years old and no drivers liscense having the time of our lives burning up all my brothers gas.Nobody ever even knew we did it.

I road my two-wheel bike without a helmet.

Used a red and white spoon for bass fishing when we did not have live bait.

Went swimming in the Gulf of Mexico without any concern about pollution.

Bought sporting goods from Sears, and they were the best.

Saw the NBC turkey turn into colors for the Rose Bowl game at my aunt's house as her husband's family owned a furniture store and they had a color TV.

Going into the marsh to fish and to get shrimp and being the only people around for miles and miles.

Paddled around the marsh in a pirogue and then took turns turning it over without regard for alligators or other animals in the water or grass.

Never wore a PFD when going fishing or boating.

Got as red as a lobster on weekends and peeled off my skin during the week, not being concerned with skin cancer.

Fished Audubon Park Lagoon in New Orleans as thunderstorms arrived as the fishing was fantastic right before the storm hit us and we were never concerned with lightning.

Changed into swim wear in the back seat of car when at the Biloxi beach in Mississippi.

Walked and fished the sandbars in the Mississippi Sound putting our catches on a stringer around our waist without regard for sharks or other predators.

 

Were we stuipd or what?

I remember there was a special on tv about Woodstock in ‘69.  
My grandson asked if I was hippie at that time.
I told him no I was what they called a “Greeser” After a minute or so he said he didn’t know that I was a mechanic!!

 

My wife busted out laughing and I gave him a hug ?

Going to a church revival meeting

Getting new clothes on Easter, Easter baskets and chocolate bunnies

Grandma's cooking on Thanksgiving

Fishing on the bank with Grandpa

Toy robots

Model airplanes

Polio shots

Saturday morning TV

Pretending to be Superman

Howdy Doody and Micky Mouse Club (especially Annette in a sweater)

The National Anthem played when TV went off the air at night

Carrying a jug of water in the trunk of your car in case of overheating

Three Musketeers candy bars for a nickel

Cokes for a dime

Going to the Drive-In

Asking a girl to a dance

Well now we all know!!! I love watching deacon Jones sack the quarterback on NFL films with Steve sabol. He would go upside the tackle’s head with his cast!

Declinism, euphoric recall, Fading Affect Bias...all reasons living in the past isn't really a healthy thing.  Remember polio, inequality, bigotry, pollution, who knows what else?  Thinking about things that aren't happening right now is not on my agenda.  It's a very unhappy perspective to think that nothing is as good as it is right now.  I prefer to live in this moment and make the best of it.  Someone should start a thread about that: what awesome thing are you gonna do today?

I got bit by a snake today so far. The customer was happy to see it go though, so I got that going for me

It's true things weren't all good in the past.  Since I was born, our country fought three major wars.  Many of my childhood friends died or were wounded in those wars for reasons that are hard to explain today. Racism was the norm and people were treated badly because they were thought to be different.  Time has a way of erasing the bad memories and only remembering the good.  When you get old, you will remember them all both good and bad.  You will reflect on your life and see things in a different light.

I'm sure the Liberal Arts High School I go to would love a gun club.  95% of the students and teachers probably wouldn't even show up to school grounds if there was one...  But less knuckleheads to deal with! ?

I don't think the cops in the school even carry guns, just pepper spray.  And we have to go through metal detector every morning.  

I was on the high school shooting team.  We had a range in the basement of the school.  (Mid 70s)

And by the way, whatever happened to Erector Sets, Lincoln Logs, and the venerable Fanner 50 (complete with trick holster)?

I did.  Yes, let's give our children a hotplate with an ungrounded plug to play with.  LOL!

 

How did we ever survive childhood? LOL!  My wife and I were commenting the other day that we never wore helmets when bike riding, or pads when skateboarding, or any protective gear when riding horses.  Got a few bumps and bruises along the way, but nothing serious.  Heck, my sister and I used to ride in the back of the pickup going down the freeway.

You can still get erector sets and lincoln logs. I haven't seen a cap gun in years. I remember riding in the back seat of my grandmother's station wagon, facing reverse. I also remember calling dibs on the middle seat with the armrest. We sat on the armrest and could see everything better.

My brother and I would go over to the James brothers on Friday and Don would take us to the Flying Scott for gut bombs and shakes. We would be dropped off at the cow palace located at the Lane County fair grounds for live wrestling!  Tough Tony Boren, Dutch Savage, Von Steiger brothers and a new guy called Rowdy Roddy Piper.  Old ladies ringing cow bells.  Not very sophisticated but what a blast we had. My mom would pick us up.

 

Ronnie J. Passed away six years ago and my brother was killed in 1976 by a drunk driver on Christmas Eve.  I cherish the memories of remember when. They were moments of happiness.
