Like the title says do you guys keep stuff you no longer use or hang onto it?  I have a modest but nice fishing boat that I haven't had in the water in three years.  I pay $ 25.00/month to store it.  Every time I think of selling it I think well maybe when I retire I'd use it or the boys might like it.  Same thing for many of my firearms and fishing gear.

I'm clearing some stuff out that I no longer use. Already sold my handguns to a shop, have a potential buyer for my shotgun...just looking for someone to buy the old .22 cal

I've also got a bike I'll be putting up - since I wracked my knee a couple years ago I can't ride it anymore. It's a classic with lots of memories - I bought it as a teen for my paper route back in 1975...frame still has the original paint-job and the stem-sticker is mostly intact as well...but it was 'overhauled' by a local bike-shop about 4 years ago, so everything works fine.

Items of sentimental value to me,

I retain and enjoy having.

Anything else is fair game.

I absolutely hate clutter in my house or my garage, etc.  If I don't use it, I either sell it or donate it.  Specifically speaking about a boat might be a slightly bigger initial investment and the only boat I own, I use regularly.  My neighbor has a 16 foot Lund Rebel tiller that is in great shape in his garage and I have seen him use it twice since I have been living here in 2012.  I asked him last spring why he doesn't sell it because the used boat market was ridiculous.  He responded with "Great question.  I don't know why I still have it."  His wife wants it gone since it is taking up half their garage too.

My old man saves pretty much everything.  Several years ago my Mother, my brother, and I split the cost on the rental of a commercial grade dumpster for a week as his Fathers Day gift.  He literally FILLED that thing with "stuff."  Kinda funny when people asked me what I got him for Fathers Day that year and my response was "a dumpster." ?

Every once and a while I will eBay | Craigslist | FB Marketplace some things that are no longer used around the house. Amazing what will sell, and for good prices!

Wife and I moved from the burbs to an acreage 4 years ago...amazing what we purged during that move.

Note: we donated a ton of clothing / household goods / etc. to local charities...and wrote-off on our taxes.

I made a cross country move in my late 40s.  I took what I could fit in a large sedan.   Everything else was gotten rid of.   Sooo liberating...ever since, I get more pleasure from getting rid of stuff than from keeping it

Some of my neighbors have an over size 2 car garage and their cars are always parked outside in the driveway.  When they open the garage door, you know why.

You have the same neighbors I do?

Since when did you move down to this side of town?

Its not just one house here either.  Its quite a few.  I mean obviously if you have a 1 car garage its going to be tough to get your vehicle in there when you have a lawn mower, snow blower, trash bin, etc in there too.  But an oversize 2 car garage and you can't even fit ONE of your vehicles in there?  Not sure about you, but I like parking my vehicles and/or boat in the garage, not filling it with stuff.

The rule in my house: If it hasn't been touched in 2 years it's gone.

I go by the same here.   For what you listed now is the best time to sell those types of items.

@Randy Price I know it can be difficult selling things you no longer want or need.  All the thought that has to go into what to sell ... what to keep.  And how much do you charge for your treasures?  So, in the interest of saving you all that grief, I would be willing to let you just ship all that unwanted firearms and fishing gear to me and I'll see to it that it gets to a good home.  And I won't even charge you for the service.? ?

My mom and dad grew up during the Great Depression. They didn’t get rid of anything because you might be able to use it for something else.

My wife throws anything that wasn’t used for about 2 years out. Or any things that she might find that she thinks might not have any use, like fishing reel parts and specialized tools. And things like the mahogany crib that I got when we had our first kid. Apparently, it will be outdated when we have grand kids. It doesn’t matter that it was completely disassembled in the attic, when no one ever goes into the attic. Every year, I have to go through all of my clothes to tell her what she can and cannot throw out. Thankfully, I am not a collector.

I have a lot of older fishing tackle that I haven't used in years. There are a few reasons why I don't get rid of a lot of it. I used to do a lot of fly in fishing trips for pike/walleyes/lake trout but haven't done a trip like that in years. I know there is a limited market for most of those lures and they'd only bring in a few cents on the dollar if I was able to sell any of them. It would be a lot of work to put the stuff online and as soon as I got rid of it, one of my friends would ask me to go on a trip and I'd have to spend a fortune at today's prices to buy the stuff again. Lastly. these lures don't take up THAT much space and I have a room to store all of it.

My uncle JW's last service cap (you'd recognize it, Andy)...he retired as a R-Adm from the USCG in 1961.

That would be twice as long as the rule around here.

Randy, I am not kidding when I say that I have around 250 or more pounds of plastic baits.

I also have over 200 hard baits of different sizes and colors.

Hooks, snaps, swivels, and weights all over the place.

Rods and reels I no longer use but still keep around.

Only fun about having all of this stuff is that it is going to drive my wife nuts after I croak trying to sell the stuff.

As for other sporting items, other than for various tee shirts, white socks, Champion sweats, Champion shorts, LSU tees, polo, and sweatshirts, swim suits, and my old jock, everything is gone.

I do have a football and soccer ball for the grandkids when they visit. And that's about it.
