I use all three types plus braid to leader, but if I could only use one it would be mono.  I read an article by a pro who said he accidently hooked a big catfish while using floro.  He applied maximum  pressure on the fish to land it quickly so he wouldn't waste time.  Because he stressed the line to it's limit he quit using that rod until he changed the line, because over stretching floro would weaken the line.  That is when I realized why I have had great success with floro, and then have a line failure that I had no explanation for.  I didn't know I couldn't stress the line.  Isn't that what fishing is about?  The most accurate rifle ever made isn't any good if every once in awhile it doesn't go bang for no apparent reason.  I am back to using mono, for most of my bass fishing, straight braid, and braid to mono leader for some techniques.  Only time I use floro, is for saltwater leaders.  I'm sure I will be back to using floro again. It's not the first time I have been off the floro wagon, and probably wont be the last.  After all the pros use it , and it's expensive, must be the best.  I just need to learn another knot, and change the line every time I stress it too much.  Berkley should just make a mono called Big Game Plus, priced just over the most expensive floro.  They wouldn't have to actually change the line, just the name and price and I would be happy.

absolute truth. i used mono for 30 years never knew it wasnt any good. started using fluoro i mean this is what all the pros use . it doesnt stretch, its invisible, its more sensitive, i mean this is the best stuff ever.i dont mind payingg for something if its actually better but i doubt it is.i just cant get over the thought in my mind that im missing something not using fluoro. i need to just spool up some trilene xt and use it for a whole year and forgt about it. but theres always this nagging thought in the back of my mind.

You're missing something alright. Poor handling, poor knot strength, phantom breakoffs, spending way more money for inferior line that needs changed often. Flouro provides better sensitivity. That's it's only positive IMO.

XT is my choice for mono, but I'd be good with Big Game, Advance, or Siege as well. Probably several others also, but these are the monos that I have experience with and like.

Right now I have all my casting rods spooled with 832, but cold clear water is right around the corner. I'll be spooling a few up with XT.

I have tried fluoro a few times over the years but every reel I have now is mono.

I have no real reason to abandon its use. Using good mono I feel has not cost or gained me any fish.

In the world of every rod out there being X-Fast, mono seems the right choice. Something has to give and the mono line seems to be the answer. I sort of recall not all that long ago that there was more breakage of these xfast rods than you hear more recently. To each his own.

I used to do a demo having a volunteer do a rod set as I held a jig between my thumb and index finger standing about 50’ away. Never had anyone every move the hook.

My hook set the rod pointed at the jig and reel the line tight quickly until the hook point has already penetrated tissue, then perform a firm rod sweep. Having a volunteer holding a piece of 2X4 wood with the jig hook resting against the wood my hook set either jerked the 2X4 out of the hand or the hook point into the wood to the barb using 12 lb mono and my jig rod.

How you set a hook is important.

That's very interesting, thanks for sharing. I have done some experimenting with myself and my wife, whereby one had the rod and the other had a bobber attached to the end of the line. Very little pressure was actually on the bobber whereas it looks/feels like you are reeling in a whale at the rod end. It was quite surprising.

I predict that mono will eventually be replaced by fluorocarbon  and braid and will be taken off the market.  Then it will be reintroduced as a special new nylon line that is very expensive and it will be hailed as the greatest line ever.

Co-Poly is a great line option in place of mono as most non - FC “mono” lines are now co-poly any way .
