OK guys I have a speech coming up for a Public speech class and I've decided to talk about preparing for a day out on the water.

I know the usual safety rules like, Life vests etc... but I want to get some other tips on what you guys do for safety before going out on the water.

My speech will be directed more about people than boats so I need more people oriented tips and not as much about boat safety

Thanks

Couple thoughts:

1. I always carry a small first aid kit on the boat, a small tool set (you never know), a larger (secondary) fire extinguisher in the bow (where I sit and consider it may not be YOUR boat you are putting out).

2. Notify someone else of you plans for the day (where you are going, when your planning on coming back).

What M Star said. I also carry emergency flares, 2 fire extinguishers,  a compressed air canister horn, 2 anchors, VHF radio, 2 million candle power hand held searchlight, and at least one gun.

Hook up a lanyard to the kill switch. Carry some basic hand tools and jumper cables. Be aware of your surroundings, especially when under power.

There are tons more, I'll post em as I think of them

Serving in the Coast Guard for 28 years taught me many things, this is one of them.

Every trip on the water is a potentially life threatening situation and it must be treated accordingly.
