carrageenan Posted September 10, 2021 Posted September 10, 2021 The rear foot on my Daiwa BG 3000 does not fit the reel seat on my Dobyns Fury FR 703SF. I called around and even the 2k model is still to wide to fit. Is there a way to address this issue without modifying the reel? How much would a new handle run me? Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted September 10, 2021 Super User Posted September 10, 2021 Replacing the handle without Dobyns being involved will void the warranty. There are some reels that won't fit Dobyn's rods - I'd work with where you bought it to exchange the Fury for maybe a St. Croix BassX...about the same price. 1 Quote

My baitcaster fits the spinning rod perfectly, so I measured with calipers, the BG is .05” too wide to fit properly. Anyone know which reels are compatible? Quote
Super User islandbass Posted September 10, 2021 Super User Posted September 10, 2021 Who would have thought that 5/100” could be such a show stopper? Sorry about that, I’d be a little miffed about that. I’d be tempted to check with Dobyns to see what they could do if you shared your discovery with them. You never know. 1 Quote
carrageenan Posted September 10, 2021 Author Posted September 10, 2021 I found an older thread on here where this issue was addressed, too bad I didn’t see this before buying the rod. Apparently a Daiwa Legalis should fit, if that’s the reel you want to use. Now I’m wondering if I could have the reel foot milled down .025” on either side. I’m assuming this will void the warranty on the reel… Quote
ironbjorn Posted September 10, 2021 Posted September 10, 2021 I've found that a lot of spinning reels don't quite fit right on Dobyns spinning rods. I've had Shimanos, Daiwas, and Pfluegers with improper fits on Dobyns spinning rods. I don't know what the deal is. Quote

My current rigs include a President-25 on a Fury 702SF and President XT-30 on a Fury 703SF - and they fit just fine. 1 Quote
Big Hands Posted September 10, 2021 Posted September 10, 2021 I have had Daiwa reels not play nice with the reel seats on Daiwa rods, even on a reel with the same family of rods. I have to wonder if they ever fished with a **** (rhymes with 'hog-ay') reel on a **** rod. It would squirm so much when setting the hook, that it would startle me and I would be wondering if the reel was coming out of the reel seat. I tried it on others of the same model, and had the same result. Not cool. They have a couple different reel foot designs, and none of them worked with this reel seat (a Fuji reel seat if I recall correctly). I was able to return the rod and exchange it for another Daiwa rod that was at almost the same price point with Daiwa's own reel seat that holds the reel perfectly. I tried some different shims and they didn't end being quite the elegant solution I had hoped for. In an industry where the components are often modular, you would think there would be standards for such things, and I would think that reel feet would not be terribly difficult to come up with such a standard. 1 1 Quote
Tatsu Dave Posted September 10, 2021 Posted September 10, 2021 Thats strange that there is no set size parameters for the reel foot to be made to for various reel seats. I've never hit that problem so far and hope to avoid it.........good luck with what Dobyns suggest's. Quote
carrageenan Posted October 18, 2021 Author Posted October 18, 2021 The associate I spoke with in the rod shop was nonchalant about the issue. He recommended a 1-2k size reel, but even some of the smaller reels have reel feet to wide to fit the seat. I’ll get around to finding the right one eventually… Quote

I would highly suggest stepping up to the Mojo Bass for $10 more than the Fury (the BassX is $10 cheaper). 1 Quote
