My first St. Croix. What to throw on the PS70MHF

I am very excited to get ahold of my first St. Croix and wondering what lures and presentations would work best won the PS70MHF.  Thanks

That rod has pretty much the same line/lure ratings as my Aird-X M/F - so what I'd throw on it is, lipless cranks, shallow cranks, squarebills, light T-Rigs, light finesse jigs, shakyheads, soft swimbaits, wacky, neko.

Uhh John - the Premier 7' MH/F spinning rod is rated for 3/8 – 3/4oz lures...it's like Dobyns rods in that respect...rated less than the words would indicate.

If you're sure - I wouldn't want to test that theory...I try to keep my lures in the rod's stated range.

I'll put it to you this way, I have around 40 SC rods. I'll even use 3/4 oz. on their ML spinning with no issues. I've also owned several Dobyns Champion Extreme. If you go over their rating, you'll probably break it like I did a couple. 

Another way to put it: take a 3/4 oz. bullet weight, a heavy worm hook, and a 7" right non tail worm, you're a little over an oz.

Oh I know that - which is why I won't run a 3/4 oz weighted T-Rig on my 704C which is my normal T-Rig rod - hook and fair size plastic would put it over the rating. That rig would go on my Aird-X H/F...

seems like a pretty good all purpose rod for lighter weight presentations, which is what I was hoping for.  Now to pick a reel, I was thinking about 2500 or 3000 Shimano or Daiwa.

I think a few of you are mistaking this for the medium/fast, it’s medium heavy/fast, and in st croix tradition they run even heavier than most brands, I’d say it’s a stout as a lot of mh baitcast rods. It’s been a couple years since i sold off this rod,  definitely not an all purpose rod, no way I’d throw any standard size lures with treble hooks, i struggled to find a purpose for it and eventually used it for light frogging and big ol 7” senkos, flukes and large worms.

It is definitely more stout than an 843, but a wee bit less than the 844.  Mostly in that the tip is more manageable.  The actual rod power more than the tip though.  Use it for big single hook applications, spinnerbaits, light frogs etc.

Fyi the PS70MH is a mh st croix spinning not a casting rod.

Difference of opinions but I was hoping to do the above mentioned Lipless, shallow cranks, squarebills, shakeyhead, wacky, neko, swimbaits lures.  Should I switch to the medium instead of medium heavy?

I think you'll be fine with the rod you have.

Medium will be your most versatile considering all those presentations. Even st croixs medium light would work great for the shaky, wacky, neko, and (lighter) swimbaits. For the hardbaits it’d depend on lure weight, if you’re going up to only 1/2 oz medium will be the ticket, if you’re talking 5/8-3/4oz+ you’re asking too much from a single rod. The taper on the PS70MH is going to give you fits if you use trebled lures on it (imo) unless you use a stretchy mono.
