DDog1 Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 I've got a whopper plopper, pop-r, superspook, and a few other commonly used topwater baits. I was on TW just browsing and was stunned by the number of different types of topwater baits on there, some of which were insanely $$$. I'd like to splurge a little and try one or two new topwater baits, can be pricey but could also be lesser known cheap, any suggestions on killer topwater forgetting price? Something most of us have not heard of! 1 Quote
NavyToad Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 About 20 years ago I splurged and spent $15 on a Lucky Craft Sammy 100. Got more bites than the Super Spook, and I still throw a Sammy today. The Sammy’s not new, but was pretty pricey 20 years ago. Bought a Yozuri 3db pencil 125 today from TW. Maybe I’ll get lucky and have some luck with it. At 1oz, it’s new and different to me. Quote

Super User WRB Posted September 3, 2021 Super User Posted September 3, 2021 Owner Cultiva Zip ‘n Ziggy in baby bass is one of my top producers. You would need to go to EBay to find a Smithwick Buck ‘n Brawl, upgrade the hooks, it’s a killer rear prop lure in Shad colors. Original Wooden Sammy 100 if you can find it. Tom 2 Quote
Bass Rutten Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 Love my wakes, they seem to be an overlooked topwater category. Quote
papajoe222 Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 They aren't expensive and need the hooks need to be sharpened or replaced right out of the package, but if you don't have one, get yourself a couple of Jointed Jitterbugs. One in frog and the other in black. You can add a feathered treble to the rear and pause it occasionally on the retrieve. My first choice when Spooks and Poppers aren't producing. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted September 3, 2021 Super User Posted September 3, 2021 Megabass I-loud. Weird bait but I have seen guys get hits when no other topwater will. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 3, 2021 Global Moderator Posted September 3, 2021 This bait is awesome for calm conditions. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Berkley_Drift_Walker/descpage-DWK.html One that is discontinued that was a fish catching machine is the Norman's Top Dollar. Kind of a walking, spitting bait with more of a shad profile than others in it's category, the thing flat caught fish. Can still find a few out there. I save mine for important fish catching situations. I've caught more fish on the 80 size of this popper than any of my Megabass Popmax could ever dream of catching. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/River2Sea_Bubble_Walker/descpage-R2SBUB.html Another bait that just flat gets bit. Think Heddon Torpedo but with a completely different sound. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Yo-Zuri_3DB_Series_Prop/descpage-YZ3PR.html Haven't ever bought into the hype of baits that make electronic noise, but this bait gets bites and they seem to be bigger than average. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Livingston_Walking_Boss_II_Jr_Tournament/descpage-WJ.html Quote
Smells like fish Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 Depending on how you work them as they can go sub-surface, wake or twitch on top but I suggest you look into the Spro Rat. Size 40 in morning dawn as a start, then go bigger (50)and smaller (30). All 3 sizes behave differently and have won me over. 1 Quote
Reel Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 From the top of my head, three that work well and that are different are the OSP Bent Minnow, Freedom Tackle Mischief Minnow (smallmouth) and the DEPS Basirisky frog. You might also look at the Riser from Jackall Quote
Lead Head Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 I have a lot of luck with a heddon spit-n-image. It can walk really fast and often produces when a slower "normal" walking bait don't. Quote

Krux5506 Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 Heddon's Dying Flutter holds a place in my heart because it was the first lure I ever used as a kid that absolutely crushed smallies one evening. They are discontinued but easy to find on ebay. Quote
